Bohonagh Water Main Replacement

Uisce Éireann, in partnership with Cork County Council, replaced ageing water mains in the Bohonagh area of County Cork to improve security of supply and reduce high levels of leakage.

The programme to replace ageing water mains in the Bohonagh area commenced on 28 January 2019. The works involved the decommissioning of approximately 1.5km of problematic water mains and the installation of new polyethylene (plastic) pipes in their place. These works were carried out as part of Uisce Éireann's national Leakage Reduction Programme. The works were carried out on behalf of Uisce Éireann by Coffey Northumbrian Limited and were completed in April 2019.

A Reliable Water Supply

• Replacement of water mains and service connections reduced the instances of bursts and water outages and ensured a reliable supply of water to customers and local businesses in the area.

Reduced Leaks

• Replacement of water mains and service connections eliminated existing leaks and reduced the amount of clean drinking water lost into the ground.

Improved Operation and Maintenance

• These works delivered cost savings by providing improved water network operation that required less maintenance in the future.

   

• Areas of work were limited to short sections to minimise impact on customers.
• Traffic management was in place during this time.
• There were local diversions in place for the duration of the works.
• Local and emergency traffic were maintained at all times.
