Ballyroan Wastewater Treatment Plant

Uisce Éireann has commenced works to upgrade Ballyroan Wastewater Treatment Plant.

Uisce Éireann has commenced an upgrade of Ballyroan Wastewater Treatment Plant (WwTP) which serves a population of 600 across Co. Laois. The upgrade of this existing WwTP will see critical investment of over €1.5m which will benefit Ballyroan homes and businesses by ensuring compliance with the current European Regulatory Standards, enable growth and development and protect the receiving waters and local environment. Conway Engineering are carrying out these works on behalf of Uisce Éireann.

Why are we upgrading the Water Treatment Plant?

The population growth in Ballyroan is putting pressure on the local infrastructure. Upgrades to Ballyroan WWTP are therefore required to increase treatment capacity and ensure compliance with discharge standards, ultimately helping to protect the environment.

What is proposed as part of this project?

The upgrade of the Ballyroan Wastewater Treatment Plant includes the delivery of:

  • New Storm Feed Pumps
  • New SBR Tank
  • Remedial Works for existing SBR Tank
  • New Storm Tank
  • New Sludge Tank
  • New Flow Splitter Chamber
  • New Air Blowers
  • New Sludge WAS Pumps
  • New Control Panel
  • SCADA integration into the county wide SCADA system

The project when complete will increase the capacity of the plant from a Population Equivalent (PE) of 600 to 849 (10-year forecast for all mechanical and electrical installations) and 900 (25 year forecast for all civil and structural installations).

What are the benefits of this project?

The upgraded wastewater treatment plant will:

  • Provide better health and integrity to the environment

  • Facilitate growth and development in the area

  • Ensure compliance with national and EU regulations relating to the treatment of wastewater
