Ballinamuck Water Treatment Plant

Uisce Éireann has commenced works to deliver a new Water Treatment Plant in Ballinamuck, Co. Waterford.

Uisce Éireann, has commenced works on the new Ballinamuck Water Treatment Plant (WTP) to provide a safe, more robust and resilient water supply to homes and businesses in Dungarvan and the surrounding areas stretching from Ballinamuck to Clonea. The project will support additional capacity, sustainable growth and development in Dungarvan and the wider area, now and into the future.

This project represents a significant investment of €29.5m and will improve the drinking water quality for the area and ensure full and ongoing compliance with drinking water standards. The works will also enable the removal of the Ballinamuck Water Supply Scheme (WSS) from the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Remedial Action List (RAL), which identifies vulnerable water supplies that need improvement.

Glanua Ltd, is delivering the works on behalf of Uisce Éireann.

What is involved as part of this project?

The new Ballinamuck Water Treatment Plant project involves:

  • Constructing a new water treatment plant (WTP) to address the operational challenges currently experienced at the existing facility.
  • Increase the capacity of the plant with an additional 2 million litres per day, improving supply resilience, boosting the performance of the existing network and accommodating additional connections for further population growth in Dungarvan and surrounding areas.
  • The provision of additional treated water storage (2 new treated water reservoirs – storage for over 5 million litres of treated water) to provide additional resilience to the network and to the treatment plant.
  • Installation of a new rising main from the existing boreholes to the new WTP.
  • Installation of a new generator to provide back up in the event of an outage.
  • Building a more sustainable plant, with a 60kWp solar array which will cater for 10% of the plant’s energy demand – this will provide approx. 50,000kWhrs per year.

What are the benefits of this project?

  • Ensure a safe, secure and reliable water supply to Dungarvan and surrounding areas.
  • Ensure compliance with National and EU drinking water regulations.
  • Remove Ballinamuck Water Supply Scheme (WSS) from the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Remedial Action List (RAL).
  • Provide significant new water storage.
  • Provide increased capacity of 2 million litres per day to support future growth and development of Dungarvan and surrounding areas.

What are the next steps?

Uisce Éireann has commenced the construction phase of the project on-site.

The project is due for completion in the Spring 2029.

Will the project involve traffic management?

As some works will be along a public road, the project will require some traffic management measures. Required traffic management to undertake the works safely will be developed in consultation with Waterford County & City Council Roads Department.  Local and emergency access will always be maintained.

We will endeavour to engage directly with impacted stakeholders throughout the project. Customers can phone Uisce Éireann on 1800 278 278 if they have any questions about the project or please visit our dedicated project webpage.
