Ballina and Newport Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade
Uisce Éireann is progressing works to deliver upgrades to two wastewater treatment plants in Ballina and Newport Co. Tipperary.
Uisce Éireann, working in partnership with Tipperary County Council, is progressing works to deliver upgrades to two wastewater treatment plants in Ballina and Newport Co. Tipperary. These areas are currently served by overloaded and outdated wastewater treatment infrastructure and therefore plant and network upgrades are required. These projects will improve the wastewater treatment quality and capacity and ensure compliance with wastewater discharge regulations. Ward and Burke are delivering these works on behalf of Uisce Éireann.
What are the benefits of this project?
The upgraded wastewater treatment plants will bring benefits to these areas including:
- Ending the discharge of poorly treated effluent.
- Improving water quality in the receiving waters.
- Enhancing local amenities and a platform for social and economic development.
- Accommodating future population growth of the surrounding areas.
- Ensuring compliance with the Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive and EPA Wastewater Discharge Licencing.
Ballina
This project includes:
- Upgrades to the wastewater treatment plant at Ballina, which will serve a population equivalent of approximately 8,000.
- A new forward feed pumping station, a new inlet works, new inlet flume and new stormwater storage tank
- Provision of secondary treatment including final settlement tanks.
- Construction of a new above ground sludge Picket Fence Thickener
- Construction and relocation of the existing outfall pipe to safely discharge treated wastewater into the Lough Derg.
- Installation additional MCC and upgrade the SCADA system to facilitate the new works
Current programme of works:
- Works commenced in early 2023
- Uisce Éireann anticipates that these works will be completed by late 2024.
Newport
This project includes:
- Upgrades to the wastewater treatment plant at Newport, which will serve a population equivalent of approximately 3,600.
- These works include:
- Construction of two new screened storm water overflow (SWO) chambers, a new inlet flume and new inlet works structure
- Provision of secondary treatment including final settlement tanks.
- Installation of additional MCC and upgrade of the SCADA system to facilitate the new works
- Combining of the two existing separate discharge points along the southern boundary to a single existing outfall
Current programme of works:
- Works commenced in early 2023
- Uisce Éireann anticipates that these works will be completed in early 2025.
