Athenry Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade

Wastewater Project

Completion of €5 million upgrade to the Athenry Wastewater Treatment Plant to increase capacity and improve water quality in the Clarin River

Uisce Éireann, working in partnership with Galway County Council, has completed upgrade works on the Athenry Wastewater Treatment Plant (WwTP). This project represents an investment of €5 million by Uisce Éireann. Response Engineering Limited (part of the Ward and Burke Group) completed these works on behalf of Uisce Éireann.

The works have resulted in a plant that will produce greatly improved wastewater discharge standards ensuring compliance with Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive requirements and in doing so, protecting the Clarin River.

Prior to the upgrade works the plant was operating beyond capacity. The upgraded wastewater treatment plant now has capacity for a population equivalent of 9,500, providing increased capacity to facilitate future population growth and commercial development in Athenry.
