Information Events

Irish Water has and will continue to liaise with the residents and elected representatives in the area, and will update this section with details of future information sessions.

During individual projects, notification letters will be issued to directly affected customers in relation to construction works adjacent to homes and businesses.

A Community Liaison Officer will be appointed for each contract and details will be provided to residents and businesses in the construction area.  

A project update email with information on ongoing works, associated information events and overall progress of the project is available by registering at corklowerharbour@water.ie.

March

  • Site visits of the HDD drill site at Monkstown for Elected Reps in advance of pulling the second pipe into place in the drill bore under the Lee linking Cobh to Monkstown.  

January

  • Public information event at Commodore Hotel in Cobh on Thursday 16 January 2020 - information evening in relation to the commencement of works at Harbour Row and Station Carpark, and applications for road closure licences at Whitepoint Moorings, East Beach and Harbour Row.  Included a public drop-in event followed by a business briefing.

September

  • Public information event at Commodore Hotel in Cobh, on Thursday 5 September 2019 including briefing for Elected Reps, Businesses and a drop-in open event for the public.

July

  • Meeting of Project Team with Cobh Municipal Elected Representatives in Carrig House, Cobh, Thursday 11 July. Briefing in relation to the commencement of the Cobh Networks Contract.
  • Breakfast briefing to Cobh and Harbour Chamber of Commerce, at Commodore Hotel in Cobh, on Friday 12 July, 2019 in relation to the commencement of the Cobh Networks Contract. 
  • Public information event at Commodore Hotel in Cobh, on Thursday 5 September 2019 to introduce the contractor and Community Liaison Office and provided information on the commencement of the Cobh Networks Contract.

June

  • Public information event and Elected Representative Briefing at Scoil Barra Naofa, Monkstown, on Tuesday 11 June 2019 in relation to works commencement on the Cobh to Monkstown Estuary Crossing Contract.

May

  • Irish Water held an information evening on 1st May at Scoil Barra Naofa in Monkstown to introduce the Project Team, Contractor and Community Liaison Officer to the community in the Glen Road area of Monkstown in advance of works commencing on the Cobh to Monkstown Estuary Crossing.
  • Irish Water held an information evening on 9th May at Rushbrooke Tennis Club, Cobh to introduce the Project Team, Contractor and Community Liaison Officer to the community in the Pebble Beach vicinity of the drilled crossing site at Cork Dockyard in advance of works commencing on the Cobh to Monkstown Estuary Crossing.

December

  • Information Evening at the Star of the Sea school, Passage West on Tuesday, 11 December 2018, to present the works proposal for the Glenbrook area, including road closure plans.

  • Facilitated introductory meeting between businesses and Local Enterprise Board at Pace Centre, Passage West, 12th September.

  • Facilitated 2 meetings between independent engineering advisor with Elected Reps and businesses respectively Rochestown Park Hotel and Pace Centre on 1st and 7th August 2018 respectively re proposed works at Cork Street and Glenbrook.
  • Information Evening at the Pace Centre, Passage West on Friday, 10 August 2018, to present the works proposal for the Cork Street area, including road closure plans.

  • Meeting with Coolmore residents at Shamrocks GAA Club on Tuesday 17 April 2018 to discuss connection requests to Cork Lower Harbour Main Drainage Project.

  • A site tour of the Monkstown Pumping Station was held for local interested residents, elected representatives and other stakeholders.

  • A site tour of the Cork Lower Harbour Wastewater Treatment Plant at Shanbally was held for local residents, elected representatives and other stakeholders.
  • The project team attended a Cobh & Harbour Chamber of Commerce event to provide an update on the project.

  • Public information events were held in Carrigaline, Ringaskiddy, Monkstown and Passage West and were well attended by members of the public and elected representatives.

January

  • An Oral Hearing was held by An Bord Pleanála in Commodore Hotel, Cobh.

December

  • The project team met with Cobh Playground fundraising group to update them on the project.
  • Drop in clinics in conjunction with the Cobh & Harbour Chamber of Commerce continued throughout December.

November

  • The project team met with Cobh Community for Change to update them on the project.
  • Drop in clinics in conjunction with the Cobh & Harbour Chamber of Commerce continued throughout November.

October

  • Site tours of the Cork Lower Harbour Wastewater Treatment Plant at Shanbally were held for local residents and for local elected representatives.  Local elected representatives were also invited to a tour of Carrigtohill wastewater treatment plant which uses the same technology.  
  • The project team gave a presentation to the Cobh and Harbour Chamber of Commerce to update them on the project.
  • Local Councillors were invited to a meeting with the wider project team to discuss all aspects of the project in advance of public consultation.
  • The project team met with residents in Cobh including Dock Cottages to explain details of the project.  The first drop in clinic in conjunction with the Cobh & Harbour Chamber of Commerce was held on Friday 21st October.

September

  • The project team provided information to visitors to Irish Water’s display at the ploughing championships.  
  • A further meeting was held with Irish Water New Connections, Cork County Council and Coolbawn residents regarding new connections.

August

  • Ongoing engagement continued with Cork Lower Harbour community in relation to proposed construction works. This included a number of meetings with local elected representatives and an open evening with the Monkstown community

July

  • The project team delivered letters to residents in Shanbally to advise them of upcoming roadworks during the school holidays to facilitate pipelaying.
  • Ongoing engagement continued with Monkstown community in relation to proposed construction works

June

  • Irish Water met with Cork County Council and the Cobh Development Strategy Group to discuss the opportunity for undergrounding of cables that could present as a result of the CLHMD Project construction works in Cobh. 
  • Irish Water attended a Cork County Council meeting with Monkstown Sailing Club, local residents and elected representatives.

May

  • The project team attended a breakfast meeting of Cobh and Harbour Chamber of Commerce and updated members about the project.
  • The project team held a beach clean event at Church Road and collected one hundred bags of marine litter

April

  • The project team delivered letters to residents in Cobh to advise them of site investigation and at Church Road, Carrigaline to advise of proposed construction works.  Follow meetings were also held.
  • Public information events were held in Cobh, Carrigaline, Ringaskiddy, Shanbally, Coolmore, Monkstown, Coolbawn and Passage West and were well attended by members of the public and elected representatives.
  • A project newsletter was delivered to 22,000 homes and businesses around Cork Lower Harbour by An Post.

March

  • The project team delivered letters to residents in Cogans Road, Shanbally and Marian Terrace, Shanbally to update them on roadworks at those locations.  These were advertised in The Carrigdhoun newspaper also.

February

  • The project team met with Cllr Marcia Dalton at Fr. O’Flynn park to discuss the ongoing pipe-laying work at this location. 
  • The project team also held a number of meetings with residents from Coolmore Cross, Carrigaline; Dock Cottages, Cobh and Coolbawn in relation to proposed construction works. 
  • Irish Water and Cork County Council met with Eir to discuss any opportunity for undergrounding of cables that could present as a result of the CLHMD Project construction works in Cobh. 

January

  • The project team met with local residents in Lower Rushbrooke and Rafeen to give an overview of the project.  
  • Irish Water and Cork County Council met with ESB to discuss any opportunity for undergrounding of cables that could present as a result of the CLHMD Project construction works in Cobh.  

December 

  • Two Information Evenings were held in Cobh on 8th & 9th December 2015. The topics discussed included:
  • Connections to Irish Water sewers - the project team will liaise directly with residents in the coming weeks
  • Traffic volumes and delay - the project team welcomed this local knowledge and insight and will incorporate this into the project approach to roadworks programming
  • Concerns about overflows at pumping stations - the project team explained the proposed alarm systems, back up pumps, back up generators, underground storage and utilising existing overflows
  • Exact location of proposed infrastructure - the project team will consider the points raised by the community in this regard
  • Possibilities of employing local people - the project team will make this information available to the successful contractors when they are selected    

November 

  • Project Team met with Cobh Development Strategy Group to discuss details of the project

  • Project Team gave a presentation on at the Cobh & Harbour Chamber of Commerce Breakfast Meeting on 14th October 2015. The topics raised included:

  • An Information Evening was held in Shanbally National School on 30th September 2015 from 5pm to 8pm. The topics discussed included:
  • Concerns about odour control - these were addressed by the project team, highlighting the experience of the West Cork Model Railway Village which is adjacent to the Clonakilty WWTP
  • Connections to Irish Water sewers- the project team will liaise directly with residents in the coming weeks.
  • Timing of works for this project and any proposed work on public walkways –the project team will liaise with Cork County Council
  • Traffic volumes and delay – the project team welcomed this local knowledge and insight and will incorporate this into the project approach to roadworks programming

EIS consultation prior to Irish Water

  • A summary report of the scheme was presented to local Councillors at the Carrigaline Area Committee meeting on 18 September 2006. Following requests from the Councillors, an overview of the Cork Lower Harbour Project was presented to the Council members on 16 October 2006. In addition, an overview of the Project was presented to local interested parties in Shanbally on 28 November 2006.
  • A Public Open Evening was widely advertised and was held at Ringaskiddy Community Hall from 3pm to 11pm on 11 January 2007 where local residents and businesses attended.
  • A second Public Open Evening was presented to the local residents and interested parties in Ringaskiddy Community Hall on 06 December 2007 from 6pm to 9pm. Details of the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) for the proposed scheme were displayed at this and members of the team were present to answer questions.

In 2013, presentations were undertaken by Cork County Council with the following:

Future engagement opportunities

We will continue to engage with local community to ensure that design and construction takes account of local issues. This process will achieve the best possible solution for improving water quality in Cork Lower Harbour and for the communities involved.
