Works progress to reduce high levels of leakage in Bray

Securing the water supply in Bray remains a vital focus for Irish Water who is continuing with efforts to drive down leakage and improve the water supply for customers. Working in partnership with Wicklow County Council, Irish Water is replacing old and problematic water mains in Westfield Park, Bray to provide a more reliable water supply, reduce high levels of leakage and improve water quality for homes and local businesses.

The works will involve the replacement of almost 150 metres of old, cast iron water mains with new modern pipes which will reduce the number of bursts and water outages impacting customers and ensure a more reliable supply of water for the local community. The works will also involve laying new water service connections from the public water main in the road to customers’ property boundaries and connecting it to the customers’ water supply. Where existing service connections on the public side are lead, these will be replaced as part of this improvement work.

To minimise the impact on customers, areas of work will be limited to short sections. Traffic management may be in place during this time to facilitate the safe delivery of these works, however, local and emergency access will be maintained. The works may also involve some short-term supply disruptions which we understand may cause inconvenience, however, the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours’ notice prior to any planned water outages. Irish Water and Wicklow County Council regret any inconvenience these necessary improvement works may cause.

The works are currently being carried out on behalf of Irish Water by Ward & Burke Construction and are expected to be completed by mid-November.

This project is one example of how Irish Water is working in partnership with Local Authorities to provide a more reliable water supply and reduce leakage. Fixing leaks can be complicated but we are making progress. In 2018 the rate of leakage nationally was 46%, by the end of 2020 it was reduced to 40%. We are currently on course to achieve a national leakage rate of 38% by the end of 2021.
