Works progress to improve supply in Billis and Stragelliff
19 November 2021
2022 promises to bring a more reliable water supply to homes in Billis and Stragelliff with work to upgrade water mains due to get underway shortly.
A 1.8km stretch of old water mains, prone to leakages will be replaced with modern pipework.
Irish Water, in partnership with Cavan County Council, will begin work on site in the coming days with the project due to be completed by early next year. The new pipes will not only reduce disruptions to customers from bursts and outages, but it will reduce the amount of clean water lost underground.
Water quality will improve and savings will be made on operation and maintenance of the network.
Outlining the benefits of the works, Declan Cawley, Networks Regional Lead with Irish Water, said: “These essential works will strengthen and reinforce the water network in these local communities. There will be an immediate positive impact to supply for customers”.
The works will take place on the L-2035-0 from its junction with L-2013-0 / L-6038-0 / L-6038-1 (Shankill Crossroads) in the townland of Shankill Upper to its junction with L6035-0 / L-60362-0 in the townland of Billis.
In order to deliver this essential upgrade, there may be short term interruptions to the water supply in the area and traffic management will be in place.
However, the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours’ notice prior to any planned water interruptions and areas of work will be limited to short distance to minimise impact.
The work being undertaken as part of this project is another example of Irish Water’s commitment to driving down leakage in Cavan.
By the end of 2021 the delivery of the National Leakage Reduction Programme will see €500m invested in reducing the level of leakage across the country by fixing and replacing old and damaged water mains. This will ensure a safe, reliable water supply, which is vital for our health, our environment and our growing population and economy.
Irish Water is responsible for the delivery of all public water and wastewater services in Ireland. We are committed to continuously upgrading and developing critical infrastructure to support the growth needed in housing and across our economy, while protecting the environment and safeguarding water supplies.
