Upgraded water mains will help to deliver homes for Loughrea area
At Uisce Éireann, we are working continuously to improve water and wastewater services for customers and communities right across Ireland. That commitment will be in evidence in the Loughrea area of Galway in the coming weeks, as work commences to upgrade more than 2km of water mains.
The upgrades will take place at Carrowbaun and Carrowmore to the north-west of the town. In total, 2053 metres of water mains will be upsized as part of this programme of works, which are being carried out under Uisce Éireann’s Accelerated Growth programme.
Projects designated as Accelerated Growth are designed to increase the capacity of the water network in areas of high housing demand. These upsized mains will provide the additional capacity needed for new residential developments to the west of Loughrea, while also improving supplies of treated drinking water for existing homes and businesses in the area.
“This is a major programme of mains upsizing for Loughrea," said Enda Mac Namara, Uisce Éireann Programme Manager.
“We will increase the size and capacity of more than 2km of water mains as part of this programme of works, delivering the capacity required for the sustainable development of new homes in the area, all while reducing the risk of operational issues going forward, and driving down rates of leakage on the existing network.”
In order for these works to be carried out safely, single lane closures will be required at points on the R349, the L3114 and the L8179. Works will be kept to short sections at a time to minimise disruption. Local and emergency access will be maintained at all times. Works will take place from Monday to Friday, between 8am and 5pm.
The works are due to commence next week and are expected to be completed by January 2027. The works will be carried out by Farrans Construction on behalf of Uisce Éireann.
