Uisce Éireann officially awarded ISO 50001 certification
Uisce Éireann has been officially awarded ISO 50001 certification, marking a significant milestone in our ongoing commitment to improving energy efficiency and reducing environmental impact across Ireland’s national water services. This achievement follows a comprehensive, multi stage audit process designed to confirm that organisations manage energy in a structured, transparent and accountable way.
Throughout the audit, the National Standards Authority of Ireland (NSAI) engaged with Uisce Éireann teams across multiple regions and disciplines, gaining direct insights into how Uisce Éireann integrates energy efficiency into every stage of its operations, from energy efficient design and capital upgrades to the day to day management of assets on the frontline.
A key enabler on this journey was the SEAI ISO 50001 Accelerator Programme, whose guidance and structured support helped strengthen our energy management practices, enhance organisational capability, and accelerate the transition toward best in class energy performance.
ISO 50001 represents the international benchmark for excellence in energy management. As one of the largest energy users in the Public Sector, accounting for approximately 10.5% of total public sector energy consumption, achieving this certification is an important step in delivering on Uisce Éireann’s Sustainability Framework. It reflects our long term commitment to reducing overall energy use, improving operational efficiency, supporting Ireland’s climate action goals, and progressing toward our objective of becoming carbon neutral by 2040 as part of our Sustainability Framework.
The certification, granted by the NSAI, is valid for three years and will be supported by an ongoing surveillance programme to ensure continued alignment with the requirements of the standard.
Reflecting on the achievement, Dermot Walsh, Energy Management Senior Manaher commented: “Achieving ISO 50001 certification is an important milestone for Uisce Éireann and reinforces our role as a responsible public utility. Managing energy efficiently is central to providing safe, reliable water services to the public, and this certification recognises the commitment of teams across the organisation. As we continue to modernise our infrastructure and reduce environmental impact, ISO 50001 provides a robust framework that supports smarter decision-making, lower carbon emissions and long term value for the communities we serve.”
The certification process involved a detailed review of how energy is planned, monitored and used across Uisce Éireann’s water and wastewater assets. Uisce Éireann as part of our Sustainability Framework will continue to build on the progress made through ISO 50001 as part of our broader commitment to environmental stewardship, resilient infrastructure and continuous improvement. This certification represents not an end point, but a solid foundation for driving ever greater efficiency and sustainability across our national water services.
