Spring brings new beginnings and an improved water supply for Newtownmountkennedy

30 March 2022

The evenings are getting longer, the days are getting warmer and Newtownmountkennedy can also look forward to an improved water supply this Spring.

Working in partnership with Wicklow County Council, Uisce Éireann is progressing with the delivery of a significant upgrade to the water supply in Newtownmountkennedy. The delivery of this project will help to provide a safer and more secure water supply for the local community while also supporting future growth.

Works will involve the replacement of approximately 1.2km of problematic water mains along Woodstock Road to provide a secure, safe and robust water supply. The project, which is being carried out by Ward & Burke Construction under Uisce Éireann’s national Leakage Reduction Programme, is scheduled to begin next week and is expected to be completed by the end of June. To facilitate the safe delivery of these works, traffic management will be in place for the duration of the works however local and emergency access will be maintained.

Joe Carroll, Water Network Programme Lead with Uisce Éireann, said: “These works are part of a significant investment by Uisce Éireann to safeguard the water supply across Wicklow and we are delighted to progress this important project in Newtownmountkennedy. The new water mains will improve the reliability of water supply for the local community.  Uisce Éireann is committed to providing a safe, secure and sustainable source of drinking water for our customers and this important project will have significant long-term benefits for the area.

Joe added: “We understand that road works can be inconvenient, but our crews will make every effort to minimise disruption to the local community as we continue to improve the water supply in Wicklow and progress the national Leakage Reduction Programme.”

The works will also involve laying new water service connections from the public water main in the road to customers’ property boundaries and connecting it to the customer’s water supply.

Uisce Éireann and Wicklow County Council will make every effort to maintain normal supply to our customers throughout the delivery of these vital works. Some short-term water interruptions may be necessary, however, the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours’ notice prior to any planned interruptions.
