South Leitrim communities to benefit as water main upgrade works commence
Communities in Castlefore and Drumlitten will benefit from essential water main upgrade works getting underway next week, as Uisce Éireann continues to invest in improving the reliability and resilience of the water network across County Leitrim.
The project will see the replacement of 1.6km of ageing water mains with new and modern pipes. The works form part of Uisce Éireann’s ongoing investment in the water network across County Leitrim and are being delivered to address a history of bursts on the route, improving resilience, and safeguarding supplies for local homes and businesses.
Patricia Lowry, Programme Manager with Uisce Éireann, said: “These works are an important step in improving the reliability of the water supply for the local community. By replacing ageing infrastructure with modern, robust water mains, we are helping to reduce leakage, improve network resilience, and deliver long term benefits for customers in this part of County Leitrim. We would like to thank the local community and road users in advance for their patience and cooperation while these essential works are carried out.”
The works will be delivered by Farrans Construction and are scheduled for completion in autumn of this year. Traffic management, including temporary traffic lights, will be in place along the R209 for works for the safety of crews and road users. Local access will be maintained, and every effort will be made to minimise disruption to homes and businesses.
Customers can phone Uisce Éireann on 1800 278 278 if they have any questions about the project or visit the Water Supply Updates section of the Uisce Éireann website for regular updates. If short-term planned water disruptions are required, customers will receive at least 48 hours’ notice before any interruption.
This project in Co Leitrim is one example of how Uisce Éireann works every day to reduce leaks. With more than 65,000 km of underground pipes nationally- enough to circle the earth one and a half times - fixing leaks can be complicated. Many are hidden, but we are making progress: national leakage is now at its lowest ever, reduced from 49% in 2014 to 36%.
