Ongoing investment programme to strengthen water supply in North Kildare

At Uisce Éireann, we know that a reliable water supply is something people depend on every day. That's why we're progressing a significant programme of investment and improvement works across Kildare to strengthen the water network, improve resilience and support future growth.

Tomorrow’s homes depend on today’s works. As Kildare grows, more people will call it home. That means making sure the water systems here are ready. We’re upgrading the water infrastructure, creating space for new homes while improving the service for those already living in Kildare. It’s part of a wider plan to deliver for communities today and build for tomorrow.

There are a wide range of critical works ongoing across the county. Our engineers have completed extensive assessments of the water network and identified a series of targeted investments and operational measures that will improve both the supply of water into the area's reservoirs and the distribution of water across North Kildare.

The programme includes upgrades to water treatment plants, major water mains, storage infrastructure and strategic network connections, alongside leakage reduction and water conservation measures. Together, these projects will strengthen the performance of the network, improve reliability for customers and create additional capacity to support future housing and economic growth.

Some projects have already been completed, while others are underway or in development as part of a coordinated programme of investment across Celbridge, Maynooth, Leixlip, Kilcock, Confey, Allenwood, Prosperous, Kilmeague, Derrinturn, Robertstown and surrounding areas.

John Joyce, Senior Portfolio Manager with Uisce Éireann, said: "We know customers in parts of Kildare have experienced disruptions and frustration when water supplies come under pressure, particularly during periods of high demand. We appreciate the patience and understanding shown by local communities while we carry out these important improvements.

"This programme combines strategic infrastructure investment with targeted operational improvements. Across North Kildare, we are upgrading water treatment plants in Srowland, Leixlip and Ballymore Eustace, improving water networks in Maynooth, Leixlip and Poulaphouca, and carrying out extensive leakage reduction works in Celbridge, Maynooth, Leixlip, Allenwood, Kilmeague and surrounding areas. Together, these projects will strengthen supplies, improve network resilience, reduce water loss and support the homes, businesses and communities that depend on a reliable water supply every day, while enabling the delivery of new homes and continued economic development in the area.”

John added: “Alongside the projects already underway, we are continuing to plan for Kildare’s long-term water needs through the Water Supply Project for the Eastern and Midlands Region. This planning and investment will help ensure communities have access to secure, resilient water supplies as populations grow and demand increases.”

Stronger network, greater resilience
To keep your water running reliably, our crews are delivering a range of operational measures designed to improve performance across the water network.

These works include pressure management, leakage detection, valve inspections, network reconfiguration and targeted repairs on both public and private-side infrastructure. We're also investigating improvements that would help maintain reservoir levels at Allen and reduce the need for restrictions during periods of high demand.

Our leakage reduction teams are working across the county every day to identify and repair leaks, ensuring as much treated water as possible remains in the network and reaches homes and businesses.

At the same time, specialist surveys are being carried out on key trunk mains supplying North Kildare. Using advanced monitoring and investigation technologies, we're identifying opportunities to further strengthen network performance, increase resilience and improve operational efficiency.

Delivering long-term solutions
Alongside immediate improvements, we are investing in projects that will strengthen the reliability, resilience and capacity of water supplies across North Kildare.

The water network serving Leixlip, Celbridge and Maynooth is a complex system that supplies a growing residential and commercial population. Recent supply interruptions have highlighted the need to upgrade sections of ageing infrastructure, including parts of the network between Leixlip and Blakestown that are up to 50 years old.

We're advancing both short-term measures and long-term infrastructure projects to reduce the risk of future interruptions while ensuring the network can support continued growth.

From leakage reduction and mains rehabilitation to major upgrades in Celbridge, Leixlip, Maynooth, Newbridge and surrounding areas, we're investing at every level of the network. These projects will strengthen water security, improve reliability for customers and ensure the infrastructure is in place to support homes, communities and economic growth across Kildare long into the future.
