Minister Browne welcomes progress on landmark wastewater projects in Donegal
Uisce Éireann’s landmark investment in three new wastewater treatment plants across Donegal was marked today with a visit by Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne TD to Kilmacrennan. With construction of new wastewater treatment infrastructure across Kilmacrennan, Carrigart and Mountcharles now in their final phases, these major upgrades will deliver significant environmental benefits, particularly for local rivers, bays and coastal waters, while also providing the capacity needed to support housing and economic development into the future.
The €30 million investment by Uisce Éireann in modernising wastewater services will improve water quality, protect the environment, and support sustainable growth across all three Donegal communities.
Welcoming progress on the critical projects, Minister James Browne TD said: “The progression of these three projects marks a major milestone for Donegal and represents a significant investment by the State in wastewater infrastructure across the county. Through the National Development Plan, the Government is making unprecedented investments in water and wastewater infrastructure nationwide, helping communities like Kilmacrennan, Carrigart and Mountcharles to grow sustainably and protect our environment for generations to come.
“Investment in our infrastructure is also investment in housing and the future homes which are dependent on wastewater services. These upgrades are critical in delivering modern wastewater infrastructure to support new homes, local employment and sustainable community growth. Aligned to our new Housing Action Plan, Delivering Homes, Building Communities, this investment is bringing new homes on stream. Just as importantly, they will deliver lasting environmental benefits by protecting our rivers, bays and coastal waters.”
Thanking the communities for their continued cooperation and support while the main works were delivered, Uisce Éireann’s Head of Infrastructure Delivery Wastewater, Sean Callery, said: “We are committed to delivering for communities across Donegal and these projects are part of our ongoing multimillion euro investment in wastewater infrastructure across the county. Following completion, communities will see the full benefits - from improved water quality and enhanced protection of waterways, to the capacity needed to support future development. Our teams on the ground have worked closely with the local communities to deliver these projects and I would like to thank people for their patience and cooperation during the last three years of construction. We’re leaving behind an important legacy for future generations with modern wastewater infrastructure that will serve these communities well in the years ahead.”
The works are being delivered by Murphy Ireland on behalf of Uisce Éireann and are now in their final stages, with completion expected in the coming weeks.
Uisce Éireann is responsible for delivering public water and wastewater services across Ireland and continues to invest in critical infrastructure to support housing delivery, protect the environment and enable sustainable growth nationwide.
