Major wastewater network upgrade to support Waterford City’s growth while protecting the local environment

Uisce Éireann has announced the commencement of preliminary works for a major project to upgrade the wastewater network in Waterford city, supporting sustainable growth, protecting the local environment, and delivering long term benefits for the community.

As Waterford City continues to grow and develop, its wastewater network must rise to meet that momentum. Improvements are required to ensure it can reliably meet environmental standards while supporting future needs.

On site investigations which are a key element of the design of this major project to reimagine the wastewater network, are scheduled to begin in late July 2026 and will be carried out by Causeway Geotech Ltd., on behalf of Uisce Éireann.

The project will include an upgrade of the Island View Pumping Station and the wastewater network in Knockboy, Dunmore Road, and surrounding areas.

Hugh Kennedy, Portfolio Manager with Uisce Éireann, said: “Site investigation works mark the beginning of a long term programme to upgrade Waterford City’s wastewater network and improve how it performs during periods of increased demand. By enhancing capacity and resilience, the project will help reduce flooding risk, protect the local environment, and support future growth for the wider area. We would like to thank the local community in advance for their support and patience as we work through the design of this critical project”

Once the design phase is completed, Uisce Éireann will progress the statutory, regulatory, and budgetary approvals required to deliver the new infrastructure and are committed to keeping the local community informed as the project progresses.

Uisce Éireann is responsible for delivering public drinking water and wastewater services for the people of Ireland.

We are committed to enabling communities to thrive by continuously upgrading and developing critical infrastructure to support sustainable growth and development, providing safe drinking water, and enhancing the environment.
