Kilcoole and Newtownmountkennedy wastewater upgrade to support future growth and development

€7m investment to unlock capacity for 1,600 new homes

Work has commenced on a €7 million project to upgrade the wastewater infrastructure in Kilcoole and Newtownmountkennedy to improve the capacity of the existing wastewater network and support future growth and development in north Co Wicklow.

The upgrade of both wastewater pumping stations in Kilcoole and Newtownmountkennedy will add better resilience to the network which will cater for the projected future growth of both catchments.

Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, James Browne, TD, welcomed the commencement of this vital work in the north Wicklow area.

“The commencement of this project is very welcome news for the communities in Kilcoole and Newtownmountkennedy. Improvements in the capacity of the wastewater network will bring tangible benefits and provide the required infrastructure to service existing and new developments in the area, including much-needed new housing.

The Government’s new housing plan ‘Delivering Homes, Building Communities’ will see the state take a bigger role in all aspects of housing delivery, including continued investment in public water services. The more efficient planning and delivery of critical infrastructure such as these pumping stations will support and enable the accelerated delivery of housing in Wicklow as well as associated facilities and services.”

Ciaran Ryan, Programme Manager, Uisce Éireann, said: “This project is part of our commitment to deliver wastewater services necessary to support sustainable housing and economic development for Wicklow communities. By investing in the wastewater infrastructure, we are enabling future growth while safeguarding essential services for current and future generations.”

The works will be carried out on behalf of Uisce Éireann by Coffey Construction and are expected to be completed by mid 2027. There will be no traffic disruption associated with the works as both projects are taking place within the existing pumping station sites.

These works are being carried out as part of Uisce Éireann’s Growth and Development Programme which is a national programme of targeted investment to increase the capacity of water and wastewater infrastructure to enable social and economic growth and development, including the delivery of essential housing.

Uisce Éireann is responsible for delivering public drinking water and wastewater services for the people of Ireland. We are committed to enabling communities to thrive by continuously upgrading and developing critical infrastructure to support sustainable growth and development, providing safe drinking water, and enhancing the environment.
