Uisce Éireann springs into action with new water main for Kiltoghert to Kilnagross area

04 August 2022

Spring brings new beginnings and Spring of 2023 will bring a much more reliable water supply to Uisce Éireann customers in Co. Leitrim.

Works on replacing 5.4km of old water main in the Kiltoghert to Kilnagross area will begin next week with a completion date in quarter two next year.

The old water main along the L3409 from the R299 junction to the Kilnagross Crossroads is susceptible to bursts but the new pipework will put an end to disruptions on the network.

Programme Manager for Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme Declan Cawley is looking forward to getting crews on site.

Uisce Éireann and Leitrim County Council are working together to deliver this project in Co. Leitrim which will ensure that locals are no longer inconvenienced by regular bursts. It will also reduce the amount of treated drinking water lost into the ground and safeguard the area’s waters supply for the future.”

The essential works will require a rolling road closure along the L3409, and diversions will be in place. The road closure will be carried out in phases, but residents can be assured that local and emergency traffic will be maintained at all times. Letters informing locals of the closure and the various diversion have been circulated.

Meanwhile, the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours’ notice prior to any planned water interruptions that may be required to carry out the works.

We understand that this type of work can be inconvenient for local residents but work crews will make every effort to minimise any disruptions these necessary works cause. We thank the community for their continued co-operation and patience,” explained Declan.

Uisce Éireann is working with local Authorities across the country to reduce leakage and provide customers with a more reliable water supply.  Fixing leaks can be complicated but we are making progress. In 2018 the rate of leakage nationally was 46%, by the end of 2021 it was 38% and now we are on track to achieve a national leakage rate of 25% by the end of 2030.

Since 2018, Uisce Éireann has invested more than €500 million to upgrade the underground water network across the country through the delivery of the Leakage Reduction Programme. We are investing a further €250 million every year up to the end of 2030 - fixing leaks and replacing pipes to provide a more reliable water supply.
