Investment to unlock new homes and strengthen water supply in Shankill

Uisce Éireann is delivering a national programme of targeted investment to increase the capacity of water infrastructure to enable social and economic growth, including the delivery of essential housing.

As part of this programme, Uisce Éireann is undertaking upgrade works to the water infrastructure in the Shanganagh area of Shankill, Co Dublin.  Upgrading the water network will increase the capacity communities need for new homes, thriving businesses and future growth.

The €1.5 million investment will involve the installation of 220 metres of pipe underneath the M11 road using tunnelling techniques to minimise disruption at road level.

James Browne T.D., Minister for Housing, Local Government and Heritage, welcomed the commencement of this vital work.

“The commencement of this project is very welcome news for the Shankill community. Improvements in the supply capacity of the water network will bring tangible benefits and provide the required infrastructure to service existing and new developments in the area, including much-needed new housing as reflected in our new Housing Action Plan, Delivering Homes, Building Communities.

“Continued investment in public water services is essential to facilitating housing delivery. That is why in the recent Budget we have increased Uisce Éireann’s funding by almost €500 million for 2026 - money that will accelerate the delivery of water infrastructure and support the development of new homes across the country.”

Uisce Éireann’s Michael McManus is looking forward to the works commencing.

“This upgrade represents an important investment in Shankill’s water network. By improving the water network and creating additional supply capacity, the project will support future growth and development in Shankill and allow for new homes to be built in the area. The upgrades will also improve the resilience of the network for existing homes and businesses.”

The section of works will take place at the end of Allies River Road, east and west of the M11. To safely facilitate these works, local traffic management measures will be in place for short periods of time during the works.  

Uisce Éireann understands that this type of work can be inconvenient and crews will make every effort to minimise any disruption these necessary works may cause.

GMC Utilities Ltd will be delivering the works on behalf of Uisce Éireann and they are expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
