Information evening on plans for major water project to upgrade the Ballina and Lough Talt Water Supply
09 April 2026
Uisce Éireann is inviting communities in North Mayo and South Sligo to an information evening next week to learn more about plans for a major upgrade of the Ballina and Lough Talt Water Supply.
On Wednesday evening, 15 April, members of the project team will be in Glasgow Kennedy House from 4pm to 8pm, where local residents, businesses and community groups can drop in, view the plans and chat directly with those working on the project.
The information evening forms part of the non statutory public consultation on the proposed upgrade, which opened last month and runs until 20 April. The consultation is an important opportunity for the community to have their voice heard.
People are encouraged to share their views and local insights on the proposed works. All feedback received will help shape Uisce Éireann’s planning application to An Coimisiún Pleanála, ensuring the project reflects the needs, priorities and experiences of those who live and work in the area.
John McElwaine, Programme Manager with Uisce Éireann, will be in attendance at the information evening and he is encouraging the community to drop in. He explained Uisce Éireann has been progressing the development of the vital project for some time and he’s excited to be in the consultation phase.
“This is a significant project with many benefits for communities in the North Mayo/South Sligo region. As part of the upgrade, additional treatment capacity and treated water storage will be provided at Lisglennon Water Treatment Plant. Ballina’s ageing water network will be upgraded, a new trunk main connecting Lisglennon to Ballina and onto Bonniconlon and Lough Talt laid along with additional network storage at Bonniconlon and Lough Talt.
“The capacity provided will support future growth in the region, while ending water abstraction from Lough Talt will allow natural lake levels to be restored and deliver significant ecological benefits for local habitats and wildlife.
“We’re looking forward to discussing the project further with the local communities in the coming days.”
Further details of the project, including how to participate in the consultation and the upcoming public information event, are available at the Ballina and Lough Talt Water Supply Upgrade Project page.
