Delivering resilience as Macroom water network upgraded with long lasting pipes
Families and businesses in Codrum, Macroom can look forward to a stronger, more dependable water supply as Uisce Éireann wraps up important upgrade works on the local water network. These improvements are all about supporting the everyday life in the community, whether it’s putting the kettle on in the morning, running a local business, or keeping community services flowing smoothly with clean, reliable water.
As part of this project, we replaced 640 metres of ageing water mains with modern, resilient pipes. These older pipes had been prone to bursts and leaks, causing supply interruptions and wasting treated drinking water, a precious resource.
The upgraded network now brings greater reliability to homes and businesses right across Macroom, providing a water service people can count on for years to come.
Uisce Éireann’s Jack Cronin is proud to be part of the team who has delivered these long-term benefits for the community.
“These works are an important part of delivering a water service built to last. By replacing ageing pipes with modern, resilient infrastructure, we’re improving water services today while strengthening resilience for the future. "
“Our teams work with great care and experience to reduce the risk of supply interruptions for customers during works and we’re grateful to the local community for their patience and support throughout these essential upgrades. This investment is rooted in care for the people we serve.”
Following the completion of the works, the permanent road surface will be reinstated at a later stage as part of Uisce Éireann’s project programme.
The works were carried out by Ward and Burke Construction Ltd on behalf of Uisce Éireann.
This upgrade is just one example of how Uisce Éireann is tackling leakage across the country. With more than 65,000kms of underground water mains – enough to circle the earth one and a half times – finding and fixing leaks can be challenging, especially when they are hidden. But progress is being made. National leakage is now at its lowest level ever, reduced from 49% in 2014 to 36% today.

We are committed to enabling communities to thrive by continuously upgrading and developing critical infrastructure to support sustainable growth and development, providing safe drinking water, and enhancing the environment.
