Crews working to resolve mechanical issues at Louisburgh Wastewater Treatment Plant
18 July 2026
Resolving a mechanical issue at Louisburgh Wastewater Treatment Plant and minimising the impact on the local community and environment is a priority for Uisce Éireann.
We contacted Mayo County Council’s Environment section as soon as the issue was identified, and following consultation with the HSE, a bathing water prohibition notice has been imposed as a precaution at Carrowmore Beach.
The notice will remain in place until the results of bathing water sampling are available.
Crews are currently organising for the repair of the affected equipment and are monitoring the treatment plant closely. In the meantime, wastewater is being removed from the site by tanker to minimise discharges to the environment.
The bathing water prohibition notice will remain in place at Carrowmore Beach until repairs have been completed and the issue has been resolved.
Uisce Éireann acknowledges the impact this notice has on the community and its visitors and is working as quickly as possible to rectify the issue. We will continue to work closely with Mayo County Council, the HSE and other stakeholders to resolve the issue.
