Contract signing takes place for works to commence on Rosses Point Sewerage Scheme

24 March 2022

Uisce Éireann, working in partnership with Sligo County Council, is delighted to announce that it has signed a contract to upgrade the wastewater infrastructure in Rosses Point. This important project will eliminate all non-compliant sewer over-flows and improve water quality in bathing waters in the area.

Uisce Éireann is investing €9 million in this upgrade project which will support economic and social development in the area as well as its vibrant tourism sector while ensuring compliance with EU Urban Wastewater Treatment Directives.

Coffey Construction Ltd has signed the contract to carry out the works on behalf of Uisce Éireann. Works on the project are expected to commence in the coming months and will take approximately 18 months to complete.

Speaking about today's milestone, Eunan Canavan, Asset Delivery Regional Lead with Uisce Éireann, said: “We are looking forward to delivering this important project on behalf of the local community in Rosses Point. The area is renowned for its water-based activities such as swimming, kitesurfing, stand up paddleboarding, fishing to name a few, and its busy tourism sector. This significant investment will boost the area by enhancing the local environment, protecting health and improve water quality on the bathing waters. It will also ensure that the wastewater infrastructure has capacity to meet future development needs in the area.

Eunan added: “This project will involve the decommissioning of the current outdated Ballyweelin Wastewater Treatment Plant, construction of a new pumping station at the existing Ballyweelin site, upgrading the Rosses Point Village Pumping Station, construction of an underground stormwater storage tank as well as increasing the capacity of the sewer network. A new pipeline will also be constructed between the village and the network in Sligo Town. Once the project is completed and commissioned, all wastewater from the village will be pumped into the Sligo Town wastewater network for treatment at the main Sligo Wastewater Treatment Plant.

We look forward to working with the local community in Rosses Point to deliver this essential project in conjunction with our partners Sligo County Council and Coffey Construction Ltd.

Uisce Éireann and our appointed Contractor, Coffey Construction Ltd, will continue to communicate with the local community in Rosses Point regarding the upcoming works throughout the project.
