Lahinch and Ennistymon Wastewater Treatment Plant

Uisce Éireann is progressing plans to construct a new Wastewater Treatment Plant in Lahinch and Ennistymon.

Lahinch and Ennistymon Wastewater Treatment Plants have been providing treatment to both communities since the 1900’s. Uisce Eireann has identified that both plants are now outdated, overloaded, and unable to cope with the needs of the communities they serve. In Lahinch, flooding affects the plant, while in Ennistymon, the system overflows at the River Inagh. Upgrades to the wastewater treatment process are required to ensure continued environmental compliance, and to support the growth and development of Lahinch and Ennistymon into the future.

The continuation of appropriate wastewater treatment will be vital to protect both human health and the local environment.

Uisce Éireann is holding a second non-statutory public consultation, giving the Lahinch and Ennistymon communities a further opportunity to learn more about the latest proposals, meet the project team and share their views. We’d like to hear from local residents, businesses and community groups as the project progresses. A public information event will take place on Thursday, 19 November, from 2pm to 7pm at The Orchard Suite, The Falls Hotel, Ennistymon, where the project team will be available to answer questions, talk through the proposals and listen to feedback. The four-week consultation will run from Thursday, 19 November to Wednesday, 16 December 2026. Updated project information and feedback forms will be available from 19 November.

Upon completion the project will:

• Improve water quality which benefits the environment, ecology, sporting and tourism activities.
• Enable future growth and development in the community and cater for an increase in population for both communities.
• Enhance amenity value by providing a cleaner environment and act as a platform for social and economic development.
• Ensure that wastewater will be treated in accordance with European Union Urban Wastewater Treatment Directives and Environmental Protection Agency wastewater discharge licensing.
