Major water network upgrade in Carrick-on-Shannon completed

Homes and businesses in Carrick-on-Shannon are benefitting from a more reliable water supply following the completion of a major Uisce Éireann water network upgrade in the town.

Delivered as part of Uisce Éireann's National Leakage Reduction Programme, the project saw almost 1km of ageing water mains replaced between Castlecara Road and Summerhill along the L3412, and from the N4 Attifinlay Roundabout to the Castlecara Road Roundabout.

The investment will help reduce leakage and bursts, improve water quality, and strengthen the resilience of the local water network, delivering lasting benefits for the Carrick-on-Shannon community for years to come.

Patricia Lowry, Programme Manager with Uisce Éireann, said: “We are delighted to have completed these important upgrades in Carrick-on-Shannon. By replacing ageing infrastructure, we have strengthened the local water network and delivered long-term benefits for customers through reduced leakage, improved reliability and enhanced water quality. We would like to thank the local community for their patience and cooperation while these works were carried out."

Finola Armstrong-McGuire, President of Carrick-on-Shannon Chamber of Commerce, welcomed the completion of the project, saying: "We welcome Uisce Éireann's continued investment in Carrick-on-Shannon and the completion of these important upgrades. Reliable water infrastructure is essential for supporting local businesses and ensuring our town continues to thrive. Improvements like these help ensure that Carrick-on-Shannon remains an attractive place to live, work and do business, and we appreciate the commitment to strengthening services for our community."

The works were delivered on behalf of Uisce Éireann by Farrans Construction and form part of Uisce Éireann's continued investment in improving Ireland's water infrastructure.

This upgrade in Co Leitrim is just one example of how Uisce Éireann is tackling leakage across the country. With more than 65,000 kms of underground water mains, enough to circle the earth one and a half times, finding and fixing leaks can be challenging, especially when they are hidden. But progress is being made. National leakage is now at its lowest level ever, reduced from 49% in 2014 to 36% today.

Previous Updates

Carrick-on-Shannon, Ireland’s Tidiest Town, is set for further enhancement with a major water network upgrade getting underway next week.

Carrick on Shannon’s success in the Tidy Towns competition reflects the pride residents take in maintaining the town’s appearance, character, and sense of place. Uisce Éireann’s investment in the water network complements that community effort by strengthening the infrastructure that supports everyday life in the county town.

As part of the national Leakage Reduction Programme, Uisce Éireann will replace almost 1km of ageing water mains from the Castlecara Road to Summerhill along the L3412, and from the N4 Attifinlay roundabout to Castlecara Road roundabout.
These works will reduce bursts, improve water quality, and strengthen the resilience of the water network for local homes and businesses.

The project also involves laying new water service connections from the public water main in the road to customers’ property boundaries and connecting it to the customers’ water supply.

Patricia Lowry, Programme Manager with Uisce Éireann, said: “These essential upgrades will bring lasting benefits to customers by reducing leakage, improving water quality, and strengthening resilience for the future. We appreciate the community’s cooperation as we deliver these important works over the coming months.”

Farrans Construction will deliver these works on behalf of Uisce Éireann with the project expected to be complete this summer.

To safely facilitate the water network upgrades, traffic lights will be in place as well as nighttime works on the N4. Customers will be given a minimum 48 hours’ notice of any planned supply interruptions.

This project in County Leitrim is being delivered as part of Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme, which involves reducing leakage across Ireland by fixing leaks and replacing old and damaged pipes on the water network.
Uisce Éireann’s long-term goal is to reduce leakage to 20%, and we are committed to achieving this through appropriate and targeted investment in our water network.

To help achieve this, we are investing over €1 billion up to the end of 2029 in the network, including leakage reduction measures. This planned investment will deliver further vital upgrades to the underground water network,  reducing leakage, improving water quality, and providing a more reliable water supply for Irish homes and businesses.
