Investment in Orchard Lane to deliver a more reliable water supply for local homes and businesses

People living and working in Orchard Lane, Birr will benefit from a more reliable water supply as Uisce Éireann gets underway with works to replace ageing watermains in the area. The investment is designed to reduce leakage, strengthen the local network and support a more dependable water supply for homes and businesses in the area. The project forms part of Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme.

The project will see almost 200 meters of old and damaged watermains replaced with new modern pipes along Orchard Lane. The upgrade will help reduce the loss of treated drinking water, improve the performance of the local network and provide a more reliable water supply for the community. The works are scheduled to commence in the coming weeks and are expected to be completed by the end of August.

Welcoming the commencement of the project, Dave Murphy, Portfolio Manager with Uisce Éireann, said: “Communities are at the heart of everything we do, and that is what this investment in Orchard Lane is all about. Homes, businesses, schools and community facilities rely on a dependable water supply every day. By replacing these ageing watermains, we are helping to reduce disruptions, strengthen the local network, and provide a more reliable service for the people who live and work here.

These improvements will help protect valuable treated drinking water, reduce leakage, and support the community with a stronger and more resilient water supply for many years to come.”

The project will be delivered by Shareridge on behalf of Uisce Éireann.

This project is one example of how Uisce Éireann works every day to reduce leaks. With more than 65,000 km of underground pipes nationally – enough to circle the earth one and a half times – fixing leaks can be complicated. Many are hidden, but progress is being made. National leakage is now at its lowest level ever, reduced from 49% in 2014 to 36% today.
