Investment in Orchard Lane delivers a more reliable water supply for local homes and businesses
Uisce Éireann investment strengthens the local network and reduces leakage
People living and working in Orchard Lane, Birr are now benefiting from a more reliable water supply following the successful completion of Uisce Éireann's watermain replacement project in the area.
The project, carried out as part of Uisce Éireann's National Leakage Reduction Programme, involved the replacement of almost 200m of ageing watermains along Orchard Lane. The upgrade has strengthened the local water network, reduced leakage and will help provide a more dependable water supply for homes and businesses in the area.
Welcoming the completion of the works, Dave Murphy, Portfolio Manager with Uisce Éireann, said: "This project is a good example of how targeted investment can make a real difference for local communities. By replacing ageing watermains in Orchard Lane, we have strengthened the network, reduced leakage and improved the reliability of water supplies for local homes and businesses.
"These improvements will help protect valuable, treated drinking water and support a more resilient water network for the community for many years to come."
This project is one example of how Uisce Éireann works every day to reduce leakage. With more than 65,000 km of underground pipes nationally, many leaks can be difficult to find and repair. However, steady progress is being made through the National Leakage Reduction Programme, with national leakage reduced from 49% in 2014 to 36% today.

People living and working in Orchard Lane, Birr will benefit from a more reliable water supply as Uisce Éireann gets underway with works to replace ageing watermains in the area. The investment is designed to reduce leakage, strengthen the local network and support a more dependable water supply for homes and businesses in the area. The project forms part of Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme.
The project will see almost 200 meters of old and damaged watermains replaced with new modern pipes along Orchard Lane. The upgrade will help reduce the loss of treated drinking water, improve the performance of the local network and provide a more reliable water supply for the community. The works are scheduled to commence in the coming weeks and are expected to be completed by the end of August.

The project will be delivered by Shareridge on behalf of Uisce Éireann.

With more than 65,000 km of underground pipes nationally – enough to circle the earth one and a half times – fixing leaks can be complicated. Many are hidden, but progress is being made. National leakage is now at its lowest level ever, reduced from 49% in 2014 to 36% today.
