Water Supply Zones

Uisce Éireann

This dataset comprises a list of Water Supply Zones under Uisce Éireann's remit. A Water Supply Zone is the area supplied by an individual water supply scheme. This typically includes one or more abstractions (from a river, lake or groundwater), a treatment plant, storage in reservoirs and the distribution pipe network to deliver the water to each household or business.

Open Data Strategy

Uisce Éireann is committed to the provision of Open Data in line with the national Open Data Strategy 2017-2022.

In addition, Directive 2019/1024/EU on Open Data, and the Re-use of Public Sector Information, and the earlier 2003 and 2013 Directives which it repeals, creates an EU statutory framework for businesses and citizens to use existing information held by public sector bodies.

The Open Data Directive mandates the release of public sector data in free and open formats. The Directive was transposed into Irish law by SI 376/2021 on July 22nd, 2021.

The overall objective of the Directive is to continue the strengthening of the EU’s data economy by increasing the amount of public sector data available for re-use, ensuring fair competition and easy access public sector information, and enhancing cross-border innovation based on data.

The main principle of the Directive is that government data should be open by default and design. The provisions of the Directive include:

  • Release of non-personal data in open formats and to open standards.
  • Data to be available in real time and via APIs (where possible).
  • New rules on charging - free reuse becomes a principle.
  • Re-use of publicly funded research data.
  • List of High Value Datasets (HVDs)  laid down in an Implementing Act.
  • Prevention of data lock-in, exclusive arrangements discouraged.
  • Re-use of data held by public undertakings such as public utilities and transport providers.
