The Department of Environment, Community and Local Government estimates that there is the potential to provide about 1,600 jobs from the metering programme.
The jobs will be available across the country and recruitment begins immediately, with 10% of the new positions earmarked for persons on the Live Register, another 10% for small and medium enterprises, and 5% for apprentices, graduates and school leavers.
The installation of the meters is labour intensive, involving minor excavation and reinstatement works after the installation of the meter. This will provide much needed employment in the construction sector.
The achievement of the social inclusion targets forms part of the contract between Irish Water and the regional contractors. Irish Water will be monitoring key elements of the contract throughout the term of the contract. In addition, the Department of Social Protection will also be monitoring progress in this area.
