Turners Cross Water Main Replacement

Uisce Éireann, in partnership with Cork City Council, has replaced ageing water mains in Turners Cross to improve security of supply, improve water quality and reduce high levels of leakage.

The works involved the replacement of approximately 4.8 kilometres of problematic cast iron water mains in Turners Cross with polyethylene (plastic) pipes. The works also involved laying new water service connections from the public water main in the road to customers’ property boundaries and connecting it to the customers’ water supply. Where the existing service connections on the public side were lead these were be replaced as part of this improvement work. The communities benefitting from the improvement works in the Turners Cross area are:

Beaufort Park Father Mathew Road O'Connell Avenue
Congress Road Friars Road O'Connell Crescent
Derrynane Road Hollyville St. Anne’s Park
Doyle Road Mercier Park St. Patrick’s Road
Evergreen Road Murphy’s Gardens Mountpleasant Avenue

The works took place in two periods beginning December 3 2018 with works on O’Connell Avenue, moving to Friars Road, Congress Road and Derrynane Road (between Congress Road and Friars Walk). Works ceased for Christmas with the works beginning again in January 2019. All excavations were temporarily reinstated for this break.

These works were carried out as part of Uisce Éireann’s national Leakage Reduction Programme and were carried out on behalf of Uisce Éireann by Coffey Northumbrian Ltd.
