Strandhill Water Mains Replacement

National Leakage Reduction Programme

Uisce Éireann in partnership with Sligo County Council has replaced problematic water mains in Strandhill, Co. Sligo to provide a more reliable water supply, reduce high levels of leakage and improve water quality.

The works involved the decommission of over 3km of aged cast iron water mains and replace it with new modern pipes. The programme to replace the water mains in Strandhill, Co. Sligol commenced in March 2022. These works were carried out as part of Uisce Éireann’s national Leakage Reduction Programme.

The section of work stook place in Strandhill, and included:

  • Installation of a new watermain on the Shore road, from the Airport road junction to the Promenade.
  • Installation of a new watermain from the Sandy Cove estate (at the Junction of the Old Airport Road) passed the Rugby Club, along the Top Road to its junction with Buenes Ayres Drive at the former Kelly’s Hotel.
  • Transfer of service connections from the old cast iron watermain to an adjacent existing uPVC watermain on Buenos Aires Drive & the Top Rd towards Ransboro Rd. The works will also involve laying new water service connections from the public water main in the road to customers’ property boundaries and connecting it to the customers’ water supply. 

Where the existing service connections on the public side are lead these were replaced as part of this improvement work. The works were carried out on behalf of Uisce Éireann by Farrans Construction and were completed by Summer 2022.

What are the benefits of the works?

The benefits of these leakage reduction works include:

  • Improved Water Quality – Removing existing old cast iron and lead from the public water network and replacing them with new pipes will reduce the risk of contamination.
  • Reliable Water Supply – Replacement of water mains and service connections will reduce the instances of bursts and water outages ensuring a more reliable supply of water to customers and local businesses in the area.
  • Reduced Leaks – Replacement of water mains and service connections will eliminate existing leaks and reduce the amount of clean drinking water lost into the ground.
  • Improved Operation and Maintenance – These works will deliver efficiencies including cost savings by providing improved water network operation that will require less maintenance in the future.

Will customers be affected by the works?

Areas of work will be limited to short sections to minimise impact on customers. Traffic management may be in place during this time. Local and emergency traffic will be maintained at all times.

The works may involve some short-term water interruptions and the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours notice prior to any planned water interruptions.

We understand that this type of work can be inconvenient and works crews will make every effort to minimise any disruption these necessary works cause.
