North Drogheda Water Network Improvement Project

Uisce Éireann Growth and Development Programme

Uisce Éireann, in partnership with Louth County Council has upgraded the water network at Mell, North Drogheda, Co. Louth to support social and economic growth and to provide a more reliable water supply to the community.

The works involved the installation of almost 900 meters of new modern pipes. These works were carried out as part of Uisce Éireann’s Growth and Development Programme and commenced in August 2022.

These works involved the construction of a new watermain between the Hill of Rath and Rosehall Roundabouts along the R166 at Mell, North Drogheda, Co. Louth.

This project was delivered to support existing and future developments within the community. It will improve the capacity of the existing water main in the area, improving performance and reducing demands on the current network.

The works were carried out on behalf of Uisce Éireann by GMC Utilities Ltd. and were completed by the end of 2022.

What are the benefits of the works?

The benefits of these watermains works include:

Supporting social and economic development – This project will facilitate social and economic growth, including planned residential development, in North Drogheda.

Reliable Water Supply – Installation of water mains will ensure a reliable supply of water to customers and local businesses in the area.

Improving the water network - This project will build resilience in the water network, increasing the capacity to deliver reliable, sustainable high-quality water services.

Will customers be affected by the works?

To facilitate the safe delivery of works, there will be local traffic management in place during construction. To facilitate works at the Hill of Rath and Rosehall Roundabouts a stop/go controlled system will be in place. For the works along the R166 a road margin/shoulder closure will be in place with traffic management to facilitate two-way traffic. Local and emergency access will be maintained at all times, including traffic to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, Drogheda.

The works may involve some short-term water interruptions to the water supply. The project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours notice prior to any planned water interruptions.

We understand that this type of work can be inconvenient and works crews will make every effort to minimise any disruption these necessary works may cause. Standard working hours are between 9.30am and 4.30pm Monday – Friday with no work anticipated on weekends or public holidays.

Uisce Éireann is working proactively with our delivery partners and as part of a multi-agency working group to ensure that our construction works are carried out in a controlled and safe manner, in keeping with Government and HSE guidelines to protect workers, their families and the broader community.
