Passage West and Monkstown remain open for business as works to clean up Cork Lower Harbour continue

Uisce Éireann, in partnership with Cork County Council, is working to end the decades-long practice of discharging untreated sewage into Cork Lower Harbour. Ward & Burke Group Limited is working on our behalf to deliver this major wastewater project. We are committed to consulting with the local community with respect to these works to ensure that Passage West remains open for business throughout. 

Following a significant planning and consultation exercise, an application for two road closures was made to Cork County Council in September. Cork County Council granted permission for temporary road closures for the works as follows:

  • Part 1 is now complete. This involved closing 40m of the road at Toureen Terrace from 1 October to 16 October. The road was re-opened on 12 October.
  • Part 2 is currently ongoing. While no road closure is necessary, one lane is open at that section of the road, Toureen Terrace on Cork Street, and traffic lights are in place. Works are progressing as planned and the expected completion date for this part of the works is 19 October. 
  • Part 3 will involve closing the road from Toureen Terrace to Comminutor (between Oysterhaven Boats and the Men’s Shed). It is expected that the road will be closed from 22 October to 16 November.

When all the Cork Lower Harbour Main Drainage works are complete in 2021, the project will treat all wastewater from Passage West, Monkstown, Ringaskiddy, Crosshaven, Carrigaline, Glenbrook, Shanbally, Coolmore and Cobh. 

The project is now at the halfway mark which means 10,000 homes and businesses are connected to the new scheme. The amount of raw sewage being discharged into the Harbour has already reduced by equivalent of 20,000 wheelie bins every day.

We would like to reiterate our commitment to working with the local community to minimise the impact of this essential work and we will continue to ensure that Passage West and Monkstown remain open for business.
