Castletownshend Sewerage Scheme

Wastewater Project

Uisce Éireann has completed works on a brand new wastewater treatment plant for Castletownshend

Uisce Éireann, working in partnership with Cork County Council, has completed works on the Castletownshend Sewerage Scheme in Co. Cork. This project involved the construction of a new wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and sewerage infrastructure which has now eliminated the discharge of untreated wastewater from Castletownshend into Castlehaven Harbour. The new WWTP will serve a population equivalent of 531.

Two mature sycamore trees located along the pipeline route are a distinct feature of the village. In order to protect the integrity of this local landmark, directional drilling was utilised in order to navigate around the root system and install the new pipelines, without compromising the health of the trees. Glanua delivered the works on behalf of Uisce Éireann.

We’re working to eliminate raw sewage discharges in Ireland

  • Nationally, wastewater infrastructure has been built in 31 areas around the country where there was no sewage treatment before.
  • 40 out of 50 untreated agglomerations either have brand new infrastructure in place or have projects under construction.
  • Over 70% of total volume of raw sewage has been eliminated by prioritising areas that make biggest impact, with a total investment of €750 million.
  • We are on track to eliminate the vast majority of raw sewage discharges by the end of 2025.
  • In Cork, works are also complete on wastewater infrastructure in Castletownbere and Inchigeelagh to eliminate the discharge of raw sewage, while works are currently underway in Whitegate & Aghada and Ballycotton.
