County Leitrim Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrades

Upgraded the wastewater treatment plants in Ballinamore, Drumshanbo, Carrigallen and Leitrim Village, Co. Leitrim, as part of an investment of €1.8 million.

Uisce Éireann, working in partnership with Leitrim County Council, has invested €1.8 million and carried out essential upgrade works to wastewater treatment plants in Ballinamore, Drumshanbo, Carrigallen and Leitrim Village, Co. Leitrim. These improvement works included upgrades to the inlet works, storm water management and sludge treatment and storage at the plants.

• Upgrade existing infrastructure at the plants and provide new elements where defects identified
• Improve the performance of the wastewater treatment process
• Prolong the operational life of the existing plants
• Reduce the risk of storm water flooding
• Ensure compliance with Urban Wastewater Treatment Regulations 2001

What is involved?

Carrigallen Wastewater Treatment Plant

• Improvements to the inlet screen for the plant
• Constructed a sludge holding tank and odour control unit
• Upgraded the existing aeration system and activated sludge system 
• Upgraded the control system, sampling and instrumentation
• Upgraded the drainage around the perimeter of the plant and general safety access

 
Ballinamore Wastewater Treatment Plant

• Upgraded the aeration system and activated sludge system
• Constructed a new sludge holding tank and odour control unit
• Provided a new control system, dosing equipment, flow meters and instrumentation

 
Drumshanbo Wastewater Treatment Plant

• Installed a new mechanical inlet screening including grit removal
• Replacement of surface aerators with fine bubble diffusion aeration system which will reduce energy consumption and significantly improve plant performance
• Constructed a new sludge holding tank and odour control unit
• Provision of storm water holding tank at the site
• Installation of new control room kiosk
• Complete upgrade of the controls, power supply, sampling, flow recording and pumping system at the plant
• New walkways, handrails, covers and external site lighting to permit safe access to all areas of the plant

 
Leitrim Village Wastewater Treatment Plant

• Improvements to the existing aeration tank and activated sludge system
• Upgraded the instrumentation, valves and flow meters, including the control system to improve performance and efficiency at the plant
