Uisce Éireann is commencing works to upgrade the Bagenalstown Wastewater Treatment Plant in Co. Carlow.

Uisce Éireann, in partnership with Carlow County Council, is commencing works to upgrade the Bagenalstown Wastewater Treatment Plant. The project will improve the treatment processes at the existing wastewater treatment plant in Bagenalstown. The existing wastewater treatment plant is currently working to the limits of its design and an upgrade is required to ensure there is capacity available for future social and economic growth in the area, as well as ensuring compliance with national and EU legislation.

What is involved as part of this project?

The project will involve the upgrading of the existing wastewater treatment plant which includes:

  • Increasing the treatment capacity from a population equivalent of 4,500 to 9,800.
  • Upgrading of the inlet works and storm holding tanks.
  • Installation of new screened storm overflow chamber, sludge dewatering building, picket fence thickener, and administration building & control room.
  • Installation of aerobic reactor, air blowers, flow diversion chambers, pumps and distribution chambers
  • Upgrading of the Pumping Station.
  • All ancillary works including pipework, pumps, landscaping and associated site development.

What are the benefits of the project?

Upon completion, these upgrade works will:

  • Modernise the current wastewater infrastructure ensuring adequate treatment capability of the plant.
  • Ensure compliance with water quality standards set down by regulatory bodies such as the Environmental Protection Agency.
  • Support social and economic growth in Bagenalstown and the surrounding area.

Next Steps

Mobilisation on site will commence in mid-May with works commencing soon after. The project is due for completion in Q1 2025.
