Roscommon Water Mains Rehabilitation

This project will see €8.9 million invested in water main rehabilitation throughout Co. Roscommon.

Roscommon has a high level of water leakage at approx. 50% and also has aging water mains which result in frequent bursts and instances of drinking water quality issues associated with the existing old and unlined cast iron mains. This project will build on earlier water conservation works to upgrade and improve water services throughout the county.

Why is this project needed?

Water leakage

Despite previous water conservation works, approx. 50% of water leaks out from Roscommon's water distribution network. This leads to higher levels and costs of water being abstracted and treated.

Water quality

Sections of the existing network in Roscommon which have lead service pipes and old unlined cast iron water mains can cause water quality problems.

Disruption to supply

Many of the water mains being replaced have high burst rates, which frequently result in major supply disruptions for customers.

Lack of sustainability

Operating, maintaining, and repairing old water mains is labour intensive and carries higher costs. It is also not sustainable for future growth in population or commercial activity in the area.

What this project involves

  1. Replacing and rehabilitating approx. 60km of defective and aging water mains throughout Co. Roscommon.
  2. Replacing and removing service connections and distribution pipework from difficult to access private lands and backyard services.

These works are co-financed by ERDF (European Regional Development Fund) funding through the BMW (Border, Midlands and Western) Operational Programme 2007-2013
