Extension of Lough Mask Water Supply Scheme

This €10 million project will deliver an extension of the Lough Mask Water Supply Scheme to Ballinlough/ Loughglynn and Williamstown.

The works include the construction of over 22 kilometres of new water mains, a water pumping station at the Ballyhaunis Reservoir, construction of a 2,800m³ ground level reservoir and control building at the site of the existing Garranlahan Water Tower. Benefits

  • Will provide a long term solution to Ballinlough/Loughglynn enabling 3,600 consumers to be taken off a boil water notice
  • Will provides a long term solution to 1,400 consumers at Williamstown who had been on a boil water notice up until 2016 by safeguarding the drinking water supply
  • Will ensure compliance with requirements set out in the European Union Drinking Water Directive and national Drinking Water Regulations

What is involved as part of this project?

  1. Decommissioning of the existing Ballinlough/ Loughglynn and Williamstown water treatment plants
  2. Construction of a pumping station at the Ballyhaunis Reservoir, enabling the transfer of water to Ballinlough/Loughglynn and Williamstown
  3. Construction of a 2,800m³ ground reservoir and new control building at the site of the existing Garranlahan Water Tower
  4. A separate upgrade project is under construction at the Lough Mask Water Treatment plant to ensure availability of water to extend supply to these areas, which will be completed during summer 2017
