Newbridge Wastewater Upgrade

Wastewater Project

Uisce Éireann has upgraded the wastewater infrastructure in Newbridge to reduce overflows into the River Liffey.

Uisce Éireann has upgraded the wastewater infrastructure in Newbridge as part of the Upper Liffey Valley Sewerage Scheme. Sallins, Clane, Naas, Newbridge and Kill are served by a wastewater network which is no longer fit for purpose. This can cause overflows and flooding during storms. Uisce Éireann is investing over €38 million to solve the problem and to provide additional capacity for future growth in these towns. Coffey Construction Limited is working on behalf of Uisce Éireann to deliver these works.

What works were carried out in Newbridge?

Uisce Éireann, working in partnership with Kildare County Council, has upgraded and replaced the sewers in several locations in Newbridge. Works were carried out at the following locations:

  • Military Road/Athgarvan Road
  • Páirc Mhuire Estate
  • R445/Edward Street
  • Moorefield Road (R445)
  • Green Road/Moorefield Road Junction
  • Standhouse Road/Artillery Place
  • Moorefield Road/Langton Road Junction

What are the benefits of this project?

  • The sewer network will have more capacity, which will facilitate future growth and economic development
  • Treated wastewater will be cleaner and will meet all regulatory requirements, which will help Ireland avoid substantial EU penalties
  • The number of emergency overflows to the River Liffey will be significantly reduced from approximately 12 per year to one per year, weather dependent
  • There will be a reduced risk of flooding in Newbridge, including Páirc Mhuire and Upper Moorefield Road

Why were these works necessary?

The existing wastewater network was no longer fit for purpose. The system did not have sufficient capacity to move wastewater to the treatment plant during storms, and some of the pipes were old and ready for replacement.

There have been storm water overflows at a number of locations, which does not comply with European legislation or Environmental Protection Agency requirements. To increase the capacity of the network we are upgrading three pumping stations and upgrading and replacing existing sewers to ensure they are large enough and in good condition.
