Works to safeguard water supply in North Mayo now completed

There’s good news for Mayo’s water network with more than 4km of ageing and damaged water mains replaced in Attymass.

Uisce Éireann, working in partnership with Mayo County Council, replaced the old cast iron mains at Currower with new high-density polyethylene (plastic) pipes.  The works will reduce the instances of bursts and water outages and ensure a reliable supply of good quality water to local homes and businesses.

Outlining the benefits of the works, Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme Regional Lead, Declan Cawley said completion of the project, which began in April, is another step in improving Mayo’s water network.

 “The importance of replacing such ageing and damaged water mains in these areas cannot be underestimated. The works will significantly improve the drinking water quality, reduce the instances of bursts, eliminate existing leaks and reduce the amount of clean drinking water lost to leakage.

“The new water mains and service connections will help conserve this precious resource and improve levels of services for homes and businesses in the area now and into the future.”

Also reflecting on the importance of the works for Currower and surroundings areas, Bryan Scanlon, Executive Engineer, with Mayo County Council, said, “The replacement of these old pipes will have a positive impact on the daily lives of the local community.

“Operational and maintenance costs will also be reduced as the network operation will require less maintenance.”

He thanked the residents of Currower and Breaffy areas, who were impacted by the works, for their cooperation in the successful completion of the project.

Uisce Éireann continues to work in partnership with local authorities across Ireland every day to reduce leaks. As part of Uisce Éireann’s National Leakage Reduction Programme, €500 million is being invested up to the end of 2021 to reduce the level of leakage across the country by fixing and replacing old and damaged water mains. This will ensure a safe, reliable water supply with is vital for our health, our environment and our growing population and economy.
