Work ongoing during bank holiday weekend to restore water to customers following unplanned events
Burst water main on Kingstone Road, Galway City
Irish Water and Galway City Council can confirm a burst to a 250mm diameter water main on Kingstone Road, Galway City led to disruptions for customers in parts of Knocknacarra, Kingstone Road and surrounding areas on Sunday.
The burst occurred early Sunday morning with repair crews on site from 4am trying to locate the burst and working right through until 10pm to complete repairs. The location of the burst pipe, under a wall, added to the complexity of carrying out the repair which involved the replacement of ten metres of pipe.
The repair to the burst was complete at approximately 5pm but it may have taken several hours for water to be returned to all customers. Crews remained on site carrying out reinstatement works until at least 10pm.
Part of the works involved the construction of a temporary footpath to allow safe passage of pedestrians on this busy road.
The Irish Water call centre was updated throughout the day and received approximately 50 calls from members of the public in relation to this unplanned incident. Given the nature of the incident, an unplanned burst, it was impossible to forewarn customers.
Irish Water and Galway City Council would like to apologise to customers affected by this unplanned outage and thank them for their patience while repairs were being carried out.
Increased seasonal demand on water supplies in the Roundstone area of Co. Galway over the weekend, led to pressure problems for some customers in the area yesterday, Monday.
Leak detection work was undertaken last week and some network reconfiguration work was undertaken during the course of the weekend. However, some areas were without a supply for a period of time, particularly the village of Roundstone. Water was restored to all customers in Roundstone town by 2pm yesterday. Irish Water is asking customers in the Roundstone area to be mindful of their water consumption during this busy summer period and to report any leaks they see on the public network by calling our Customer Care Team, open 24/7, on 1850 278 278.
