Water supply returning in Athlone over the course of the afternoon
Outages due to a burst water main on the Ballymahon Road
A normal water supply should return over the course of the afternoon to customers affected by outages due to a burst water main on the Ballymahon Road in Athlone yesterday.
Repairs to the burst main were completed yesterday evening and the reservoir is now refilling. When it is sufficiently replenished, the water supply will be turned back on and it is expected that a normal supply will begin to return to customers over the course of the afternoon. However, some customers in higher areas may continue to experience outages or low pressure for a longer period.
Alternative water supplies
In the meantime, alternative water supplies will be provided at the following locations until a full supply is restored:
- Willow Park
- Lower Road Retreat
- Dublin Road
- Birr Turn
- Cypress Gardens
Irish Water makes every effort to ensure that the alternative drinking water supply provided, including the tanker/bowser and dispensing tap, are adequately disinfected. However, as it is not practical to provide sterilised containers for the public to transport drinking water from the tanker to their homes, we cannot guarantee that any containers used by the public do not negatively impact or contaminate the drinking water.
Therefore, as a precautionary measure, it is recommended that any members of the public who obtain water from a tanker or bowser boil the water before use.
Irish Water and Westmeath County Council would like to apologise to its customers impacted by this burst.
Updates on the burst can be found on our Water Supply Updates section. You can also contact our customer care helpline, open 24/7, on 1850 278 278.
