Water supply restored in Listowel following completion of repairs
All areas should see normal flows returning
(5.30pm, 4 September 2017) Water restrictions have now been lifted and the water supply has been restored to Listowel and surrounding areas following the successful completion of repairs to a water pump at the Dromin Water Treatment Plant.
Customers in all affected areas should see their water supply returning to normal over the course of the evening.
As the water returns, pressure may be low at first but it should build back up over a number of hours. There may be some slight discolouration of the water but this can be cleared by running the cold kitchen tap. There is also a possibility that some domestic water systems may become airlocked. Information on how to deal with airlocks is available in our Questions and Answers section.
Water tankers which had been in place at various locations for the past two days will be stood down shortly as the supply is restored.
Senior officials from Irish Water and Kerry County Council will continue to monitor the situation closely as water supply returns to homes and businesses. Work will continue on implementing a back-up pumping system so that we have the necessary resilience in place for securing the supply. We will be implementing a full replacement of these pumps as part of an upgrade programme and the timing of this replacement is being reviewed by Irish Water following this incident.
Irish Water and Kerry County Council thank the Civil Defence for their assistance throughout the outage as they distributed bottled water to vulnerable customers and assisted with the distribution of information leaflets to homes and businesses. Alternative water supplies were diverted to the local hospital, nursing homes and where possible to other businesses in the area.
Irish Water and Kerry County Council apologise to customers for the inconvenience caused and thank them for their patience while crews worked to resolve this issue. Customers can contact our customer care helpline 24/7 on 1850 278 278 or visit www.water.ie for further updates. Irish Water and Kerry County Council thank the Civil Defence for their help throughout the water outage and EPS Group for their assistance in making replacement parts for the pump.
