Water main improvement works in Tubbercurry, Co Sligo are now successfully complete
Improved water supply in Tubbercurry following the completion of water main improvement works
Irish Water confirmed today that customers in Tubbercurry in Co Sligo have improved water supply following the completion of water main improvement works in the area. The benefits to customers in these areas is the provision of a more reliable water supply due to a reduction in the instances of bursts and outages and the amount of clean drinking water being lost through leaks.
What was involved?
The works involved the replacement of approximately 438 metres of problematic cast iron water mains with high density polyethylene (plastic) pipes. The programme to replace the water mains along Mountain Road, Tubbercurry commenced in February 2020 and was carried out as part of Irish Water’s National Leakage Reduction Programme. The contract was carried out by Farran’s Construction on behalf of Irish Water and in partnership with Sligo County Council.
Explaining further, Irish Water’s Leakage Reduction Programme Regional Lead Dave Murphy said “I am delighted to confirm that the works along Mountain Road, Tubbercurry are now complete. Irish Water is committed to safeguarding the water supply for customers in Tubbercurry and we are delighted that replacement of approximately 400 metres of old cast iron mains with high density polyethylene (plastic) pipes is finished. The works also included the laying of new water service connections from the public water main to customers’ property boundaries and connecting it to the customer’s water supply.
‘’We would like to thank the local community in particular for their patience while these works were being carried out. The works did involve some short-term water shut offs and local traffic management, which impacted the local community. Irish Water regrets any inconvenience these necessary water network improvements may have caused, but is delighted that the area will now benefit from a more reliable water supply, with reduced instances of bursts and outages and reduced leaks. Tubbercurry customers and local businesses will now enjoy improved water quality and a more reliable supply of water.”
National Leakage Reduction Programme
These works were carried out as part of Irish Water’s national Leakage Reduction Programme which will see €500 million invested up to the end of 2021 to reduce the level of leakage across the country by fixing and replacing ageing water mains. This will ensure a safe, reliable water supply which is vital for our health, our environment and our growing population and economy.
