Water main improvement works in Greystones to improve supply and reduce leakage

Almost 1km of new water mains will be constructed along the public road

Irish Water, working in partnership with Wicklow County Council, is progressing with water main improvement works in Kindlestown, Greystones, to improve the security of supply, water quality and reduce high levels of leakage in the area. 

The works will involve the decommissioning of over 1.5km of old and problematic back yard water mains. Almost 1km of new water mains will be constructed along the public road and new service connections will be installed from the new water main to each customer’s property. These works will ensure a more secure water supply and improved water quality for residents in Upper Grattan Park, Lower Grattan Park, Kindlestown Park and Beechbrook Park.

Possible short-term shut offs

Short-term water shut-offs may be necessary, however, Irish Water will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours’ notice prior to any planned supply disruptions. To facilitate the safe delivery of the works, temporary road closures and traffic management will be in place and the local community will be notified in advance. Diversion routes will be clearly signposted and emergency and restricted local access will be maintained. Irish Water and Wicklow County Council regret any inconvenience these necessary works may cause. These works will be carried out on behalf of Irish Water by Ward and Burke Ltd and are scheduled to begin on Monday 7 September. 

Speaking about these works, Joe Carroll, Irish Water’s Regional Lead, commented “We understand that this type of work can be inconvenient and we will ensure our work crews make every effort to minimise any disruption these works may cause. We would like to thank the local community for their patience and cooperation while we carry out these necessary works to improve the water quality and supply in Kindlestown”.

Leakage Reduction Programme

This project is one example of how Irish Water is working in partnership with Wicklow County Council to reduce leaks every day. Fixing leaks can be complicated with over 63,000km of water pipe in Ireland. These works are being carried out as part of Irish Water’s national Leakage Reduction Programme which will see €500 million invested up to the end of 2021 to reduce the level of leakage across the country by fixing and replacing ageing water mains. This will ensure a safe, reliable water supply which is vital for our health, our environment and our growing population and economy.
