Irish Water is progressing a project to solve the problem of inadequate sewage treatment in Gweedore to protect the environment.  Gweedore does not currently have adequate wastewater treatment and is over reliant on the use of septic tank systems. Irish Water working in partnership with Donegal County Council are developing a new sewerage network for the area and upgrading the treatment plant.

The upgrade of the existing wastewater treatment plant will reduce the level of untreated wastewater discharging into the environment while also delivering extra capacity to support development in Gweedore. The new sewerage network will ultimately lead to a reduction on the reliance of septic tanks in the area. The proposed collection system allows for properties and sites in the area to be connected to the network, where they may have previously been constrained by the ground conditions if a traditional sewerage system was used.

To allow for the connections to the network over 40 homes have signed up to the Demonstration Project and initial surveys of these homes have been completed. Irish Water would like to thank the people of Gweedore for their support to date.

Consultations have also been on-going with all landowners identified on the proposed demonstration project. Given the importance of the project to the wastewater infrastructure, Irish Water will now endeavour to acquire the wayleaves by way of Compulsory Purchase Order pursuant to the provisions of the Water Services Act, 2007 (as amended). Irish Water has submitted the Compulsory Purchase Order to An Bord Pleanála. The timeline for the commencement of works is subject to CPO statutory approvals.

This project will meet the needs of the local community and ensure compliance with the Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive. It’s also part of a wider investment in Donegal as part of Irish Water’s investment plan. Works have been prioritised to address the most critical issues in line with commitments outlined in Irish Water’s Business Plan. Delivery of the business plan will involve a €5.5 billion investment in capital spending on drinking water and wastewater quality and capacity and new infrastructure up to 2021.

Cuireann Uisce Éireann uasghrádú ar líonra agus ionad séarachais chun cinn i nGaoth Dobhair chun an comhshaol a chosaint

Tá tionscadal á chur chun cinn ag Uisce Éireann chun an fhadhb maidir le cóireáil séarachais neamhleor i nGaoth Dobhair a réiteach chun an comhshaol an chosaint.  Níl cóireáil fuíolluisce dhóthanach i nGaoth Dobhair faoi láthair agus braitheann sé barraíocht ar úsáid a bhaint as córais dabhcha séarachais. Tá Uisce Éireann, ag obair i gcomhpháirtíocht le Comhairle Contae Dhún na nGall, ag forbairt líonra séarachais úr don cheantar agus tá an t-ionad cóireála á fheabhsú acu.

Leis an uasghrádú ar an ionad cóireála fuíolluisce atá ann cheana laghdófar an leibhéal fuíolluisce neamhchóireáilte a scaoiltear isteach sa chomhshaol agus acmhainn bhreise chun tacú le forbairt i nGaoth Dobhair á soláthar ag an am céanna. Beidh laghdú ar an spleáchas ar dhabhcha séarachais sa cheantar mar thoradh ar deireadh ar an líonra séarachais úr. Leis an gcóras bailithe atá beartaithe beifear ábalta áitribh agus láithreáin sa cheantar a cheangal leis an líonra, i gcás go mb’fhéidir go raibh srian orthu roimhe seo le dálaí talún i gcás gur úsáideadh seanchóras séarachais.

Ionas go mbeifear ábalta ceangal leis an líonra chláraigh níos mó ná 40 teach leis an Tionscadal Taispeántais agus cuireadh suirbhéanna tosaigh ar na tithe sin i gcrích. Ba mhaith le hUisce Éireann buíochas a ghabháil le muintir Ghaoth Dobhair as a dtacaíocht go dtí seo.

Bhí comhairliúcháin ar siúl leis na húinéirí talún a aithníodh chomh maith maidir leis an tionscadal taispeántais atá beartaithe. I bhfianaise na tábhachta a bhaineann leis an tionscadal don bhonneagar fuíolluisce, déanfaidh Uisce Éireann a dhícheall anois na ceadanna slí a fháil trí bhíthin Ordú Ceannaigh Éigeantaigh de bhun fhorálacha an Acht um Sheirbhísí Uisce, 2007 (arna leasú). Chuir Uisce Éireann an tOrdú Ceannaigh Éigeantaigh faoi bhráid an Bhoird Phleanála. Tá an amlíne maidir le tosach na n-oibreacha faoi réir ceadanna reachtúla CPO.

Comhlíonfaidh an tionscadal seo riachtanais an phobail áitiúil agus cinnteofar leis go gcomhlíonfar an Treoir maidir le Cóireáil Fuíolluisce Uirbigh. Tá sé ina chuid d’infheistíocht níos leithne i nDún na nGall chomh maith mar chuid de phlean infheistíochta Uisce Éireann. Tá tús áite tugtha d’oibreacha chun dul i ngleic leis na saincheisteanna is criticiúla ar aon dul leis na tiomantais atá léirithe i bPlean Gnó Uisce Éireann. Beidh infheistíocht €5.5 billiún i gcaiteachas caipitil i gceist leis an bplean gnó ar uisce ól agus cáilíocht an fhuíolluisce agus acmhainn agus bonneagar úr suas go dtí 2021.
