The equivalent of 600 wheelie bins of untreated wastewater is discharged into Galway Bay each day

Irish Water, working in partnership with Galway County Council, is working to end the discharge of untreated wastewater to Galway Bay. This unacceptable practice is unsustainable and threatens water quality as well as the amenity value of the coastal waters around Spiddal.

At an information event today, we will unveil plans to stop the discharge of the equivalent of 600 wheelie bins of untreated wastewater being discharged into Galway Bay each day. The plan includes the construction of a new wastewater treatment plant in Spiddal.

What are the benefits?

The provision of wastewater treatment for Spiddal will mean improved water quality of bathing waters at Trá na mBan and Céibh na Spidéil, enhancement of Spiddal’s amenity value and will act as a platform for social and economic development. The project will assist with ensuring that the water quality standards set out in relevant legislation will be achieved.

The proposed new wastewater treatment plant will be located at the site of the existing Udaras wastewater treatment plant, north of the Udarás na Gaeltachta Craft Village. A below ground pumping station will also be constructed in the green area in front of the Craft Village with a rising main to the new wastewater treatment plant. The rising main will be approximately 280 metres in length and located along the Craft Village access road and adjacent to the Cló-lar Chonnacht premises. A treated wastewater pipeline will also be laid along the same route to safely discharge treated wastewater via the existing outfall to the sea.

Irish Water will submit the planning application to Galway County Council this year and, subject to statutory approval, works on this necessary project will commence in 2019.

This project forms part of Irish Water’s investment plan. Works have been prioritised to address the most critical issues in line with commitments outlined in Irish Water’s Business Plan. Delivery of the business plan will involve a €5.5 billion investment in capital spending on drinking water and wastewater quality and capacity and new infrastructure up to 2021.

Nochtaíonn Uisce Éireann pleananna d’ionad cóireála fuíolluisce nua don Spidéal a chuirfidh deireadh le scaoileadh fuíolluisce neamhchóireáilte isteach i gcuan na Gaillimhe & a thabharfaidh deis le haghaidh forbairt soisialta agus gheilleagrach

Tá Uisce Éireann ag obair i gcomhpháirt le Comhairle Contae na Gaillimhe chun stop a chur le fuíolluisce neamh-chóireáilte atá ag silleadh isteach i gcuan na Gaillimhe agus iad chun forbairt a dhéanamh ar ionad nua cóireála fuíolluisce don Spidéal agus na ceantair ar a imeall.

Ní rud inbhuanaithe é fuíolluisce neamhchóireáilte a scaoileadh agus cuireann sé cáilíocht an uisce i mbaol. Baineann sé ó luach taitneamhachta na n-uiscí cósta timpeall ar an Spidéal freisin. A bhuí leis an tionscadal seo, cuirfear deireadh le fuíolluisce neamhchóireáilte is comhionann le 600 araid rothaí d’uisce a bheith á scaoileadh go díreach isteach i gCuan na Gaillimhe gach lá. Is iad seo a leanas na torthaí a bheidh ar chóireáil fuíolluisce a sholáthar ar an Spidéal: Cuirfear feabhas ar cháilíocht an uisce sna huiscí snámha i dTrá na mBan agus i gCéibh an Spidéil; Cuirfear le luach taitneamhachta an Spidéil agus tabharfar deis le haghaidh forbairt shóisialta agus gheilleagrach; Comhlíonfar rialacháin náisiúnta agus rialacháin an Aontais Eorpaigh maidir le fuíolluisce uirbeach a chóireáil;

Réiteofar an bealach le haghaidh forbairt amach anseo laistigh de cheantar an Spidéil.

Beidh an t-ionad cóireála fuíolluisce nua atá beartaithe lonnaithe ar shuíomh an ionaid chóireála fuíolluisce reatha atá suite ó thuaidh de Shráidbhaile Ceardaíochta Údarás na Gaeltachta. Tógfar stáisiún caidéalúcháin faoin talamh freisin sa limistéar glas os comhair an tSráidbhaile Ceardaíochta, rud a mbeidh a phríomhphíobán aníos nasctha leis an ionad cóireála fuíolluisce nua. Beidh an príomhphíobán aníos thart ar 280 m ar fad agus beidh sé lonnaithe feadh bhóthar rochtana an tSráidbhaile Ceardaíochta agus in aice le háitreabh Chló Iar-Chonnacht. Déanfar píblíne fuíolluisce chóireáilte a leagan feadh an bhealaigh chéanna chun fuíolluisce cóireáilte a scaoileadh amach chuig an sruth éalaithe reatha.

Is féidir le custaiméirí teagmháil a dhéanamh le Uisce Éireann ar 1850 278 278 & (9) a bhrú do sheirbhís trí Ghaeilge nó ríomhphost a chur chuig GalwayUWW@water.ie más mian leo aon cheist a chuir nó má bhíonn aon fhadhbanna le linn na tógála.

Déanfar an iarratas pleanála a sheoladh chuig Comhairle Contae na Gaillimhe i mbliana agus ag braith ar cheadú reachtúil cuirfear tús leis an tionscadal i 2019.

Tá an tionscadal seo mar chuid do phlean infheistíochta Uisce Éireann. Tá tosaíochta tugtha do na hoibreacha a bhfuil géar ghá leo, iad seo leagtha amach sa phlean infheistíochta freisin. Beidh €5.5 mbilliún le infheistiú idir seo agus 2021 i dtionscadail chaipitil chun an plean infheistíochta a chuir i gcríoch chun, áit a bheas infheistíocht sa líonra poiblí, i gcailíocht agus toilleadh uisce le n-ól agus fuíolluisce.
