Water supply on Inis Meáin now safe to drink

Irish Water can confirm that the drinking water supply on Inis Meáin is safe to drink. This supply has passed all microbiological tests and is fit for human consumption.

While there are sporadic Trihalomethanes (THM) issues with the supply on the island, Irish Water is progressing a permanent solution to ensure the THM levels are within the parametric values set out to ensure the water is safe to drink. This project is due to be completed by December 2017.

In the interim a pilot project which involves installing additional carbon filters to remove the naturally occurring organic material which lead to the formation of THMs is due to be completed within the next two weeks.

Irish Water takes its advice on public health issues from the HSE and the World Health Organisation. These organisations are national and international experts on public health matters.

The risk associated with elevated THMs is uncertain, it’s small and it’s long-term, in contrast if we do not disinfect our drinking water supplies adequately our customers face a real, immediate and serious risk of infection from water-borne pathogens such as eColi and Cryptosporidium which can cause serious illness that is potentially fatal especially for vulnerable customers such as the elderly and very young.

The HSE’s information for consumers on THM’s states: “The use of chlorine to ensure safe drinking water is one of the greatest public health achievements. Trihalomethanes (THMs) may be formed as a result of adding chlorine to water containing high levels of organic material (e.g. vegetation).

The benefits of using chlorine to treat our drinking water are much greater than any possible health risk from THMs.”

For the first time in Ireland, Irish Water has put in place a prioritised programme of investment which will address all inadequacies in drinking water parameters including THMs. Our Business Plan sets out a clear commitment to reduce the number of schemes at risk to zero by 2021.

Irish Water’s priority is the health of our customers and because of this we are disinfecting the water to avoid the threat of serious health issues in the short term, while in conjunction we are putting in place the long term measures to ensure that all our customers have access to water supplies that fully compliant with all drinking water parameters including THMs.

Is mian le Uisce Éireann a dheimhniú go bhfuil soláthar uisce Inis Meáin sábháilte le n-ól. Tá gach scrúdú micribhitheolaíochta pasáilte ag an soláthar seo agus tá sé slán sábháilte le n-ól.

Cé go mbíonn roinnt babhtaí do thríthailameatáin ag baint leis an soláthar anois agus arís, tá Uisce Éireann ag obair i láthair na huaire ar réiteach chun dul i ngleic leis an bhfadhb seo agus súil go mbeidh sé curtha i gcríoch i mí na Nollag.

Tá plean sealadach pílóiteach curtha i bhfeidhm san ghearr théarma ina mbeidh scagairí carbón ag baint an ábhar orgánach as an tuisce a chruthaíonn THM. Beidh an obair seo curtha ina chríoch i gceann coicíse.

Glacann Uisce Éireann comhairle ó Fheidhmeannacht na Seirbhísí Sláinte agus an Eagraíocht Dhomhanda Sláinte maidir le sláinte poiblí. Is iad na heagraíochtaí seo na saineolaithe ar chúrsaí sláinte poiblí.

Tá neamhchinnteacht ag baint leis an mbaol a bhaineann le leibhéil ardaithe THM sa ngearr agus san bhfad théarma mar chodarsnacht leis an mbaol atá le gan díghalrú a dhéanamh ar an soláthar uisce le clóirín. Tá fíor chontóirt ag baint leis seo le frídíní ar nós eColi nó Cripteaspóiridiam in ann a bheith i láthair in amhuisce.

Is éard a dheireann Feidhmeannacht na Seirbhísí Sláinte leis an bpobal maidir le THM ná: “The use of chlorine to ensure safe drinking water is one of the greatest public health achievements. Trihalomethanes (THMs) may be formed as a result of adding chlorine to water containing high levels of organic material (e.g. vegetation).

The benefits of using chlorine to treat our drinking water are much greater than any possible health risk from THMs.”

Don gcéad uair riamh sa tír seo, tá Uisce Éireann tar éis clár infheistíochta a chuir i bhfeidhm chun dul i ngleic le cúrsaí THM agus a chuirfidh an méid scéimeanna a bhfuil baol THM orthu go neamhnaoi faoi 2021.

Tá sláinte an phobal mar phríomh thosaíocht ag Uisce Éireann agus tá Uisce Éireann ag obair go crua chun a chinntiú go mbeidh soláthar sábháilte buan ag cách faoin am go mbeidh 2021 sroichte.
