Overnight restrictions are being introduced to ensure adequate water supplies during the day

Irish Water and Tipperary County Council wish to advise customers served by The Commons Water Supply that overnight restrictions will be introduced this week in order to ensure adequate supplies during the daytime.

Water levels in the supply have dropped considerably due to the prolonged dry spell in recent months and demand is continuing to outstrip the supply of water available.

Restricting the supply overnight will enable the recovery of levels in the reservoir and safeguard the water supply available to supply homes, farms and other businesses during the day.

Areas affected

The restrictions will be in place from 10pm to 7am, starting tonight (Wednesday, June 17). The areas that will experience night time restrictions from time to time are Ballingarry, Boulea, Black Common, Rocky Road and surrounding areas.

The water supply will be restored to customers each morning as the network refills. It can take a number of hours for the water to restore to customers on higher ground or at the end of the network once the water supply is turned back on.

Why is this needed?

Duane O’Brien, Irish Water’s Operations Lead for Tipperary said “These restrictions are unfortunately necessary as a result of dropping water levels at The Commons reservoir supply. We are seeing the daily demand vary from day to day and on any given day the reservoir level can drop significantly. In order to manage this, we intend to introduce night time restrictions on a number of areas of the scheme. We will review reservoir levels each evening and assess if water has to be turned off that night and the number of areas to be turned off. We will only be turning off the minimum number of areas to maintain reservoir levels while minimising the impact to customers.

“We understand that this may cause some inconvenience and would like to assure the community that our top priority during the current dry period is to protect our water supply for use in homes and businesses and for essential sanitation during the Covid-19 crisis. We are asking local people to continue their efforts to conserve water where possible. Simple water conservation efforts can have a significant impact on driving down demand on the supply. There are lots of helpful tips for conserving water on water.ie but the key messages are to leave the hose and the pressure washer in the shed; don’t use paddling pools; reuse household water for the garden; and take shorter showers."
