New water mains upgrade in St Patrick’s Park commences
3.5 million litres of water per week saved in Carrick on Shannon following leak repair works
Three and a half million litres of water per week is the amount of water that has already been saved as a result of the Leakage Reduction Programme works carried out by Irish Water, working in partnership with Leitrim County Council in Carrick on Shannon in a bid to improve water security, and reduce leakage.
Separate programme of works set to commence in the area
This positive news comes as Irish Water is set to commence a separate programme of works in St Patrick’s Park, Carrick on Shannon where 170 meters of new water main, and 780 metres of ageing and problematic backyard water mains with lead service connections will be decommissioned. These works will ensure a more secure water supply, improved water quality for residents in this area, and a reduction in the high level of leakage in the area.
Information evening for the community
We held an information evening for the local community and elected representatives last November to inform them of the benefits of the project. The works have now commenced on site and will continue into June.
Declan Cawley, Irish Water commented: “We would like to thank residents who have engaged with us on this important project, and on the other leakage reduction works in Carrick on Shannon. These works will have lasting benefits for the local community for years to come.” The works in Saint Patrick’s Park are being carried out by Farran’s Construction in partnership with Leitrim County Council on our behalf.
Leakage Reduction Programme
The Leakage Reduction Programme will continue over the coming months. To date, in Carrick on Shannon 77 leaks have been repaired resulting in water savings equivalent to the daily usage of over 3,800 people. Some of the work has been undertaken at night time to reduce disruption to customers.
These works on the South Leitrim Regional Water Supply are part of our €500 million National Leakage Reduction Programme. This four year programme will assist to reduce the high level of leakage across the country by finding and fixing leaks or replacing ageing and problematic water pipes. The works were completed by Leitrim County Council and Farran’s Construction Limited.
Further information on our Leakage Reduction Programme is available on our Leakage Reduction Programme page.
