Works form part of national Leakage Reduction Programme

Irish Water, working in partnership with Leitrim County Council, is set to undertake leakage investigation and repair works across Carrick on Shannon town to improve water supply and reduce leakage to benefit local residents and businesses.

These find and fix works on the South Leitrim Regional Water Supply are being carried out as part of Irish Water’s National Leakage Reduction Programme. This four year programme will assist to reduce the high level of leakage across the country by finding and fixing leaks or replacing ageing water mains. The works are being carried out by Farran’s Construction Limited over the coming months.

What is involved?

Explaining further what’s involved Leakage Reduction Programme Regional Lead, Declan Cawley, said “These works involve surveying of District Metering Areas across the town in conjunction with Irish Water’s Find and Fix Scheme and delivery of the First Fix Free Scheme.

“Works relating to District Metering Area review and the Find and Fix Scheme often have no impact on customers. They may require short term water outages however these are generally undertaken during the night when water usage is low and to ensure the level of customer disruption is kept to a minimum.

“As part of the First Fix Free Scheme where unusual usage or continuous flow alarms are being recorded customers are contacted directly by Irish Water. We are reliant on customers engaging with us to schedule a suitable time to them to have a free investigation completed. Every effort is made to accommodate a suitable time and date to the customer. Currently in cases where the customer does not engage with us the leak will continue and water is lost that potentially could be saved by a free repair if the leak is located between the customer’s premises and property boundary.

“Where water main renewal works are identified from our investigations every effort will be made to keep the level of customer disruption to a minimum.”
