Irish Water working to enhance security of Listowel water supply
Following the full restoration of water supply to Listowel and surrounding areas yesterday, Irish Water is continuing to carry out work at the Listowel Water Treatment Plant to enhance the security of the local water supply.
A pump failure at the treatment plant last Saturday night led to water supply disruption for approximately 4,000 people in Listowel, Moyvane, Knockanure, Lisselton, Finuge, Lixnaw and surrounding areas.
Crews from Irish Water and Kerry County Council responded immediately and, along with their contractors, worked throughout the weekend to repair the pump and restore it to full operation. This repair was completed and the pump brought back into service late on Sunday night and water was restored to all customers over the course of the day on Monday.
During the incident, tankered water supplies were made available in all the affected areas and alternative water supplies were diverted to the local hospital, nursing homes, schools and where possible to other businesses in the area.
Work will continue throughout this week on implementing a back-up pumping system so that the necessary resilience is in place to secure the supply ahead of the start of the Listowel Harvest Festival which gets underway on Sunday.
Irish Water will be implementing a full replacement of the pumps as part of an upgrade programme and the timing of this replacement is being reviewed by Irish Water following this incident.
Margaret Attridge, Irish Water’s Operations Manager for the Southern Region, said: “We would like to acknowledge the huge efforts of Kerry County Council staff in dealing with this incident. Crews worked long hours over the weekend, including at night, to ensure that water supply could be restored to customers as quickly as possible.
“We would also like to thank the Civil Defence for their help in distributing bottled water and information leaflets, and all the contractors who provided great assistance in resolving the incident."
Irish Water and Kerry County Council apologise to customers for the inconvenience caused as a result of this incident and thank them for their patience while crews worked to resolve it.
